Here is a perfect example why DIY car modifications should be illegal. Highly educated engineers spend thousands of hours designing a car to make it safe, just to have some half-brained redneck idiot "mechanic" to "improve" his truck, putting other road users at danger.

Guys who make dangerous mods to their cars should be put in jail and their vehicles confiscated and destroyed.

If you believe that you are "good at cars", go to college, get an engineering degree, pass the selection process to one of the (highly selective) automotive companies, and then put your talent to a good use. If you fail at any of these steps, it means that your don't have enough brains to mess with cars and keep your vehicle stock.

Really? And how do you know that the driver modified his/her truck? Do you have a crystal ball? Maybe the auto place that rotated his/hers tires forgot to torque them down. You are making alot of assumptions when you do not know all the information.
If you are so againt people who make modifications to there trucks you should stay off this fourm because almost every one here does.

There may have been a spacer installed on this vehicle, but I can almost guarantee the wheel bearing was screaming well before this moment occurred. This sure looks like the hub separated to me... And if there was a spacer it's still sandwiched in there. Not saying that a spacer may or may not add additional load and decreased life to a wheel bearing, but the spacer itself wasn't the cause here IMO.

Watch the video in the link. The truck clearly has aftermarket wheels with large offset. I'm not making assumptions - the video is crystal clear that the wheels were not OEM.

I am not against car modifications that are made by professionals. I am against DIY idiots who make modifications without a slightest idea of the consequences. As an experienced engineer I deal with such idiots every day.

Of course spacers add load to the bearings. Ball bearings have very good radial load capacity, moderate axial load capacity, and very low bending load capacity. Any wheel load that is offset from the bearing plane will add bending load, drastically reducing the life of the bearing.

I mean unless you’re some sort of cyborg programmed by a non-human… even the most well trained individuals make mistakes…

so much so that there are TV programs to highlight and demonstrate this..

Not sure where I fall in this. I did my own modifications but am also a mechanical engineer. Graduated #1 in my class and am in grad school.

Also, let it be known that an "educated" individual, doesn't necessarily equal a "smart" individual....

You are permitted to make all the mods you want but can also tell yourself to pound sand if you attempt to make any mods.

As an accident/crash investigator, this is quite possibly the coolest crash I've seen. Holy Hell...

Engineers are chest thumpers, too. Nobody really has a clue. Just remind yourself these people are doing the best that they can.

The wheel rolling into the back of the kia at the end made this infinitely more funny.

The person walked away, by the way.
