They didn't say in the news article, but one of the neighbors reported that they apparently used a copy of the fob to steal the trucks.

I've got my fobs in faraday pouches now. You can also turn off the rf , but I haven't verified - (I think it's hold the lock button, and click the open button twice)

    https://winknews.com/2023/03/22/thieves-targeting-ford-pickup-trucks/

Update: I confirmed the button sequence above turns off the RF (battery saving mode, page 127 of the owners manual) - to turn the RF back on click either lock/unlock key.

I always turn off my Tacoma FOBs. I actually do it without noticing I do it anymore. Habit even when driving to the store.

I'm thinking that sequence is standard for all current generation toyotas.

so i am guessing turning off the fob means you use the emergency key to unlock the doors?

you do realize those e keys are not meant for daily use.

edit: or are you turning the function on/off all the time?

nope, just disable to function so someone can't clone the signal, to enable the function again press any of the buttons once and you can use the fob normally again

thats funny. if i am going to clone a fob, i am going to do it as you are unlocking the vehicle or locking it so i know which one to steal.

and i dont have to be within the range you think i need to be in.

with good antennae and good sniffer its not hard.

Yep, that would be the best time to steal the car as the driver is not likely to return for a while. Or, they grab the code as you arrive home and return another time/day to steal the vehicle.

How can you tell the FOB is disabled after you do the steps?

Fx50 is an Infiniti suv, not a truck, right?

At least they weren't stolen via Bluetooth a la Kia/Hyundai or Chrysler :D

walk up to the truck, and try to open the door... it doesn't allow you to. Similarly - if inside the truck, when it's disabled... Try to start it, it will display "cannot find key"

I think I've read the range currently is about 300' - but, I'm sure with more accurate devices, it is probably further. There is still a window of opportunity for sure, but, their timing is a bit more limited now as to when they can do it.

I thought the 3rd gens were a little more involved when it came to the fobs and RF, hence the reason the 3rd party fob programmers do not work and you have to have the dealer program a new fob. If some black market sniffer works to copy the signal I'd jump all over that for my own personal use instead of awaiting the fabled 2nd fob that may/may not arrive some day.

you need techstream to authorize the fob in the ecu supposedly. not sure if its a guid function now with the new fobs or what. there is a post somewhere on the 3rd gen forums about this.

it depends on the devices they are using. a simple setup is a relay attack. one device near the source and another at the target vehicle. they can go up to a 1000 ft range on a relay attack

    https://www.wired.com/2017/04/just-pair-11-radio-gadgets-can-steal-car/

typical attacks that you see on YT or what not can get up to about 300 ft

you could do a relay attack in a parking lot and then use the relay attack to clone a fob if you have a relay record the signal to then program a fob quickly.

its all relative in any case. how much effort is the thief willing to put in for 1 person trying to thwart them compared to the general public that have no clue or dont care. me i would move on to a quicker target.

yeah walmart type parking lots are great, lots of cars and no one is really going to bother you since there is so many people around. and most people going into walmart are there for 30-90 mins.

and you dont have to worry about a person coming out with a gun or something or camera's. and the walmart cameras are crap for fidelity.

watch the video in my previous post where 2 guys do a relay attack and steal a car.
