Truck barely has 2,000 miles and I got a nail in the tire. Les Schwab says it is too close to the side wall and can’t repair so offered to replace the tire for $490. Not looking forward to that.

I manage a fleet and I agree. I wouldn’t repair that at the place I work at however for one of my vehicles I would.

Otherwise measure the tread depth and buy used off eBay.

If you replace, replace in pairs. unless the difference is so minute it wouldn't technically mess with alignment.

490 for an OE tire? Seems a little high

Learning to plug your own tires is a critical skill, if not for the wasted time alone. I buy the cheapo kits from harbor freight, I use it once and toss it. I like to keep a few in the tool box

Fun story....back when I was 18 working at a Chevron this dude pulls in at midnight with some skank in his car and asks me to plug his leaking tire. Back then you couldn't plug a radial tire which his was. So anyways I plugged it and said good luck and pocketed the cash.
Buddy pulls in who works for a towing company after I close for a beer, gets a police call for a MVA.....I jump in and go for the ride.....and guess who's car is on the roof LOL No sign of the skank!!

Big reason why I buy the road hazard on all my sets of tires.

One other thing you could do (assuming you have this same tire on your spare) would be to plug it, put it on the spare rim, then buy one tire and rotate the current spare onto your regular rim. That way you'll only need to buy one tire, but you'll have two 'new' tires, so to speak.

I've had nails similarly close to the sidewall, and have been told that while they would not run it as a 'main' tire, it'd work alright to get you to where you need to be as a spare.

I agree, it looks repairable to me. Better to sell you a new tire than a $20 plug.

I agree with Randydw. It is easy to do. One thing to add....
When you buy the tools, get heavy duty ones. I went out and purchased a cheapo kit. It bent and was much tougher to get the plug in.
    Spend the little extra...

BTW: I used to work at a gas station. Taxi cabs would come in. We plug tread sidewalls, with multiple plugs. Not recommending that, but they held up well.

I would not want to be stranded or have a blow out with kids in the truck (the whining drives me nuts). While Tundra is dang near bullet proof in an accident, I would not risk it. You might want to make a decision soon before that nail head breaks off.

Plug it. Tire repair places are conservative and won’t plug and patch an external tread block on the tire for liability reasons.

If you plug it and have to work your way through the steel belts, you’re good. If you don’t feel the belt, it needs to be replaced.

I’ve had a screw in the same spot. I plugged it held up well. Looks like you have a roofing nail. Should be less damage and easier to plug.

As a rule I don't buy extra warranties. But I might if I think I'm a higher risk than the average person.

Has anyone been denied a "road hazard warranty" because the damage occurred offroad?

I have not and AFAIK the only limiting factor is the tread depth (if the tire is worn down a lot, they won't hand you a brand new one)

Roofing nail has a nice point, isn't too large of a diameter and isn't very long. The hole will practically be self sealing at lower psi. I would plug it in that thick treadblock. If you get a plug kit, get one that has the cement. Don't trust the "glue free" ones. Ream the hole, use copious amounts of the cement on the plug and plug er up.

Hell, it might not have even punctured the carcase with a roofing nail.

I have had nails in tires for thousands of miles. The only reason I found out was when swapping tires the tech told me. Would I changed it out had I known? Yessir.

On one of my rescue missions a few years ago I had to plug several holes in the sidewall of a trailer tire, then drive to a tire shop to swap it out. That was the only thing I could do in the middle of BFE Wyoming. That whole trip was a shit show anyway.

OK...so if you have no pressure drop, I would mark the tire where the nail is and take the nail out. If you still are not leaking air, it may not have gone in far enough to puncture all the way through the tire carcass.

Seriously. Just plug it. It's not black magic. It's just a repair, like any others. It will take less time to fix, than to read this thread.
