I got the Baofeng ham radio that Rusty linked. He said it works with GMRS radios as well

I wish I took the free GMRS course two Jambos ago. Now I think they are charging for those classes. They didn't even have em last year.

@DJenerated can you link the one you ordered? Most BF radios will do both bands unless specifically noted.

This is the one you got? https://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-Upgr...79012445&sprefix=baofeng+gmrs,aps,197&sr=8-16

Read the manual, learn how to get into frequency mode, and punch in frequency 151.880, see if the radio will let you talk over it.

This Amazon page is labelled incorrectly, the seller might be selling them with the GMRS channels pre-programmed (not much of a value), but the UV-5R is not a GMRS radio. GMRS radios can talk on only GMRS frequencies. Programmable VHF/UHF like the UV-5R and the UV-82HP can be programmed to the GMRS frequencies, but it's technically not legal.

GMRS is just a $35 license and no test, free courses to learn more about it are nice, but don't pay anyone for GMRS knowledge/ help.

Ham is the license that requires a test, and is technically required for the VHF/UHF frequencies. For T2S though, don't sweat not having a license. Stay off repeaters and only use it for trail runs.

No i ended up with the ham i posted above. What's the difference if they can communicate with each other? Are they or aren't they compatible is all I GAF about. I don't know what all the techno talk means. Give me the broad strokes, spare me the details. Talk to me like I'm 5

I barely know how to work mine but it seems to be working on that frequency. I know I can at least listen to others. Worst case, if I need help I'll just fire my Glock into the air like Will Ferrell.

You and I are the same.
My last GMRS would listen to the frequency I needed, but refused to broadcast on it and I have no clue how to fix that.
I don't know how these things work. I just need em to work. I'm used to the motorola radios at the plant.

You said you canceled that order and bought another one. Shoulda listened. Anyways, charge the battery first, then type in a 140.xxx freq and see if it sticks

Wait, so you’re saying pushing the up/down arrow 620 times isn’t the right way to program the radio?

I almost bought the P.A. bullhorn. Not for science, just for fun, and being obnoxious. Okay..... I may still buy one.
@Sunnier did you ever get your whips sorted with the harness replacement? or where are we with that? jajaja

I personally prefer having a buddy scream into their radio and then set mine to scan until it finds them.

Only progress was, I sent back the one with the fubar'd connection. When the box came back, I didn't even open it. So many other priorities.

I guess... maybe... I'll have had enough trail running by the time I hit camp Thursday, that I could hang in camp, outside of GFF, and do long-overdue truck mods....

... but if homies are headed out, I'll want to go with. Probably no whip affixed.
