transmission shifts and works fine, but can only start from stop if shifting into low and manually shifting up to higher gears. Then after a stop, will only start out again if shifting down back to low to start from stop.
    i would welcome any diagnosis.

The transmission otherwise shifts normally at all speeds except wont start out from a stop without first shifting into low.
when attempting to start out in drive it acts as it it is in N and does nothing!

    Pretty things
I would try and post in the "1st Gen" section since it appears you have a 2001 tundra.

You are currently in the 2nd gen section.

What transmission is in this? It sounds like it has a mechanical governor and/or the tail shaft speed sensor is not working?

It should have some codes stored for this type of failure. Have you hooked up to it to read them?

    Start there!

Whats the fluid look like? I'd lean to a burnt clutch pack if the fluid was recently changed. But maybe a stuck ball.

If it was a solenoid, it would try to jump into 3rd when you put it in drive.

    any codes?

Did you check the fluid level? Failure to automatically shift properly is a classic symptom of improper fluid level.

I doubt that's what it is, but it's the first thing to check any time you're seeing trans probs: Is the fluid the right color? Is the fluid level proper?
