Does anyone know why the SR does not have grille shutters. Apparently the grille shutters help with aerodynamics and fuel economy.

can grille shutters be added after market ?

same reason they detuned the SR compared to the rest of the trims :)

Grille shutters are to keep warm air in the engine bay they close at -40c are you asking about the air damn at the bottom of the bumper, that’s for economy

I don’t mind not having the air dam but the shutters are also for fuel economy. According to Google
“Open shutters allow air to flow through the radiator and into the engine compartment to promote cooling. When cooling air is not needed, the shutters close, rerouting air around the vehicle to reduce aerodynamic drag and fuel consumption”

Do you think Toyota deleted the shutters because the SR engine doesn’t need this function?

its probably due to the intended target was for a minimalistic work truck primarily.

That was my guess as well. One comment I always see online and from my labor friends is they "don't want a bunch of shit that's just going to break". If I needed a work truck I certainly wouldn't want stuff that doesn't directly add value to my purpose. Because they're right, it's all shit that's going to break. Only a matter of time.

For honesty - I have a Limited and I know full well these features are going to cost a fortune to fix in a few years. So I either pay for them or trade it in before they start to malfunction.

Do you think they improve fuel economy due to the improved aerodynamics? I know even as a work truck I would want better fuel economy

Thing is they don’t improve fuel economy all the time. I imagine they remain open quite a bit to provide cooling airflow to the radiator.

SR doesn’t have them. Also has the best mpg rating per the EPA. In real world about the same but less stuff to break down the road.

I'd venture a guess that whatever help they provide for mpg is minimal. On my Ram 1500 it had grille shutters and were used for helping control the temp of the truck, mainly in cold weather theyd stay closed until the truck warmed up, but also for MPG. They had issues with them not opening soon enough on hot days and when I was towing in mountains the truck would get pretty hot before they opened so I removed them to alleviate that issue and I saw a zero change in mpg after I did. I wouldn't lose sleep over them, I have them on my SRS and would rather not given the choice just for the sake of simplicity. I would have bought a SR instead of a SR5 if the engine had the same output as I'm not about the bells and whistles. I use the truck to tow and haul cargo.

I find it hard to believe that shutters that far behind the grill would affect air flow at all. (for mpg purposes) For the MY’23 they removed the air dam on all TRD Offroads but left the shutters. Has to be for cold weather but I have yet to find official documentation on them. Someone said they close at -40°C (which is also -40°F) but that seems way to cold to do any good. *UPDATE / I found a 6 yr old Toyota Prius video on its active shutters and it closes at 40°C (not -40) and has other temps and speeds it sets itself to avoid freezing closed and air in heating. 40°C is 104°F!! Come on, that’s gotta be wrong. Now I’m even more confused. Not sure if this Prius programming has anything to do with Tundra. We’ll see I hope.

It’s -40c they close and that’s very cold, you’ll only get that highway driving in the winter. It’s in the owners manual, here’s a pic of our winter temps.

It’s in your ‘22 Owners Manual? Page#? I’ve looked for Grille, Shutters, in the active air dam area. Haven’t found it. Thanks.

I’ll have to find it again, there’s a thread on here discussing it last year.

The ambient tempature would need to be -40c and it was colder then that this past weekend with the wind chill but the truck never said more then -31c on the dash so I don’t think they will close until the dash says -40c

Thanks Ryan. This is the first doc that’s makes logical sense on shutter operation. All the others I’ve seen talk about shutter operation at -40c.

if i remember correctly, toyota temp sensors only go to -40 c/f. if it gets colder than that the sensor will only display -40 c/f

40 degrees fahrenheit is +4 celsius, the shutters would be closed full time in the winter and the fall and the spring at the temp. If you mean 40c then that’s 104F still very hot.
