The UV-82HP has a flashlight and I think it can automatically flash SOS. It also gets FM radio.

Well then, get the one Des posted if you can. We agree it's the best handheld. The one I posted is less awesome but does everything you'd need it to do. And I recommend a cig adapter A/C plug type charger. But if you could find a way to steady the charging base that comes with it, and charge it using your new inverter, that'll do.

I feel like I’ve only charged my radio once? The life seems to be pretty good on mine.

I don't know about a USB one, but the 12v cigarette outlet I linked above charges pretty quick.

I just turned mine on for the first time and two good ole boys are having a conversation about Arby's.

I'll study the owners manual before we get there.

In my experience, they hold up super well if you mostly listen, occasionally broadcast. It's only times I've led a million newcomers, and also used it to spot everyone through obstacles, that battery has run out. So I typically carried 2 per truck. Now that I have one mounted to Hulk, I use them to spot, and for local 1st timers to borrow for day trips so they don't have to buy one for something they may do only once.

Jajajaja: TBC, I tell them this why I'll loan a hh radio the first time; in reality, pretty much everyone I've taken out falls in love and wants to go again  (off-roading), so then they buy a handheld before the next trip. Between 2nd and 3rd trip, they buy a Caliraised amber chase light.... That's how it goes. I should get commissions. The first loan of a boefang handheld is pretty much the first free snort on a mirror. :p

They might be on a repeater or something and you need to set the transmit to a different offset. That, or they're licensed hams and ignoring you because you're not.

I'm guessing, they were on your second programmed frequency, 440.125, not the one you have set to broadcast, 145.225. That little symbol left of the frequency shows which you have set to transmit. But you'll be able to listen to both.

I can only hear them when that symbol is on 145. When I switch to 440 and try to broadcast they still don't respond. Oh well. Maybe you can show me in person. I just need a way to listen and won't have much to say.

That’s the nice thing about the UV-82HP, it has A and B keys so you can easily Tx on either active channel

On my trip picking up the buell, i'd do the 'honk' sign, pulling the whistle cord for truckers...i think they were talking about me, i flew through memphis and got zapped at like a buck twenty. The trucks behind me pulled the worlds slowest dragrace and i didnt see anyone behind me for 50 miles. Really put the >week old <15 year old sportbike that passed a glance cause i fanboyed and it was cheap. Otherwise woulda got a rustbunny vr6 swapped golf to drive home. Arkansas was ridden the whole way stopping every 100 miles @ full tilt. That trip was over 2500 miles because Appalachian backroads.

i dont need a radio, i can work paper maps, but i'd like to be able to shittalk.

The radios are for trail banter, calling out oncoming traffic when it's busy... or maybe beer police warnings... and keeping the group together (advising when the rando 2.5 gen we let join us gets the only flat of the day).
