Yep, we'll show everyone how to set frequency. A cb won't help you at this event, only maybe with talking to truckers on the way.

Edit: don't push buy yet. See post below.

WAIT! I don't think this is right. Here's what you want:62911410-5729-4D02-8594-D235D90DD60D.jpg
Give me a few to figure out if it matters, but something about the description of the one you posted, makes me worry it's a variation designed for small teams (kinda like walk-in-talkies).

1000 channels vs 128? Thank you. I can get the fancy one. I plan to get a small 120v inverter, too.

An inverter is cool for lots of items; however not as good for these as a charger you can plug into your cig lighter. Reason is, we'll do very little driving on smooth roadway, so you'll be trying to charge while we're off road, and the radio will fall out of the inverter base when we're off road.

@des2mtn do you have a link to the charger you use? It's probably the easiest I've seen?

I know it’s not as nice as his, but I have a lot of Milwaukee stuff, picked up one of the M18 inverters and it works pretty well. We air up our mattresses with it fine, and then use the usb for our phones all weekend usually. It does a good job for what we need

At the bare minimum, everyone attending should have a Baofeng.

Get the radio Sunny linked or the one I have (just has a tiny bit more power): https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00Z52HP10?ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Bigger battery with 12v charger. This big battery also fits into the 110v charger that comes with the radio. I still keep my original battery as a backup because you're not supposed to charge the radio when using it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08MFJ3T3Y?ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Longer antenna, not necessary but it's handy. You can also hard mount or mag mount other antennas. Hard mount antennas aren't friendly if you want to get out and use your radio to help spot other drivers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00KC4PWQQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Handheld mic/speaker with clip, only transmits on the "B" channel using a Baofeng UV82HP. I clip it to my seat belt when driving or my shirt when spotting. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07MX4J3W8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Our favourite handheld is this one Des posted. The "2 channel" capability refers to being able to have 2 separate frequencies programmed at the same time. Allows listening to both, and to transmit on whichever of the two is designated as primary-- easy to toggle back and forth.

Examples of use: a few of us go out together on a trail run using one frequency, but we know a buddy is set to arrive and has the "main" event frequency. Buddy gets into the area, broadcasts on the main frequency, any of us with 2 channel capability can listen up for him, as we attend to the trail run comms. Another scenario: for those of us that tend to go out on trips with buddies in the same (different from each other) groups, set a frequency most-used by each, don't have to reprogram each time.... I mean, programming takes 7 seconds but, when you're new, it saves trying to remember which buddies use which frequencies. And... cool to show up for events with multiple groups of buddies, and be able to scan to know what each is doing.

Info offered in case it helps anyone justify which to buy. I will add, one of the ones I posted is cheap-ass and sometimes gets hot or zaps me. The one we have of the slightly fancier version Des posted seems better insulated, and better overall.

The truck can charge usb stuff. I want the inverter for a coffee maker, maybe a skillet, like 1.5 kw. I have white gas heaters and cookers, but i need to replace the seals and carry fuel... a hardcore inverter should let me run stuff. I even have a big qx80 battery i can use as a jumpered tagalong, and to hold my tent down while i'm out truckin'.

It might have happened more near camp, kinda like reminding everyone to shut their radios off. But when the convoy was doing the stuff, people were standing around talking instead of sitting in their a/c chattering.

One thing about the radios we linked is that they are versatile. The Baofeng UV-5R and UV82-HP are programmable and you can talk to people that use normal walkie-talkies (technically not legal). Depending on the area you can listen to public safety departments on them.

I keep 155.160 programmed in my radio in case of emergency as that's the SAR frequency in CA. Pretty sure it's commonly used in AZ too.
