speaking of which.... yesterday I had a neighbor approach me and ask that I fix a porch light that's strobing a little (it's an LED that's starting to die)...

she said it was messing w/her mental well-being

Apparently, I left my poker face at home for this conflict, and she got mad and cuz I was 'laughing at her'

To an extent, yes. On nights I could do homework for something, but my job covers all my bills, leaves room for toys and fun, and has an unbeatable schedule. I'm sorely lacking in motivation to change anything. There are some positions I could train/learn into over the next couple years with a degree or two, but they force me into a 4/10 schedule with on call just about every other week for a lateral move in pay to start with and probably a year or two before any gains in pay. They also cap out about at about a 20% increase from where I am now. That's not enough money to move me from this schedule.

I hate flickering lights too, but I wouldn't approach it with the whole metal well being whine. I'd just say "Hey, you know that light is starting to flicker out. You need help getting it swapped out?"

I don't love them, but I don't hate them like you other guys do. I just view them as the price of the schedule. I'd like it more if there were a shift differential for them like what @LarryDangerfield gets. As it stands, I actually make a bit less on a week of nights than I do on a week of days.

 

In addition to my spin top and other PNW lifestyle choices, I choose to minimize waste... So, I'm gonna let that little light flicker till it's all flickered out; especially after the neighbor was dumb enough to let her cookoo out of the clock

We have a lot of issues like that with our on call. Back up is supposed to answer the call, but shift pay isn’t there like it is for the on call guy…….. I guess I’m not answering if I’m not getting paid……

 

Any push would likely result in the schedule being nuked to some 3 shift bullshit. I'm not complaining about the pay, mind you. It makes it easier to just use vacation for nights, never for days. The only reason there is "less" money on nights is because of the way the OT resets at 12AM Sunday. It makes for 4 hours of OT on a night shift pay schedule and 8 hours of OT on the dayshift. The hourly rate is the same.
