I'm not normally one to get pissed off either. My blood has been just below boiling since about 2pm today and I'm not sure why.

Anyone got a reco on a more-compact but useful wet-dry vac?

 

The Rigid 4 Gallon / 5 HP has been a solid performer for me.
I've got the older one w/o wheels, easily 15 years old . . . I've abused the hell out of it dragging it around.
Doing demo jobs, I've ran a 5" grinder w/ a diamond cutting wheel through mortar /concrete / tile etc. while simultaneously following right behind the blade with the vacuum hose to suck up dust & keep from blowing dust everywhere indoors . . . this is about as hard as you can be on the thing and it keeps on ticking.
It takes a 'regulation size' filter which aides in getting the full suction from the 5 hp.
Only downside is the smaller 'volume' of 4 gallons . . . if you're picking up stuff that takes up space then it may fill up quicker than you'd like.
Other than that, I highly recommend it.

BTW, If you're going to be doing a lot of volume of fine material that will clog the filter, look into a 'Dust Deputy' cyclone separator . . . it may seem like a gimmick, but it is 100% legit. You'll have to fabricate a little 'cart' for it . . . but there's plenty of videos of people who've built theirs DIY style. My only suggestion is get the OG 'Dust Deputy' . . . the knock-offs are garbage.

My shop vac has been running a rag for a filter for 6ish years, and has been on 3 wheels since dad threw it away.

I think i'm due.

I like Ridgid tools, this thing was a beast. But motor has been smelling burnt for a minute, and clearly the plastics gave in.

Must be it! And yes, fishing would be awesome.

It's super uncharacteristic of me to have such a f-off attitude. Something just came over me early afternoon and I was, like ... ugh.

I'm gonna blame it on Weathertech and their ill-fitting shit-for-mats.

 

I wouldnt mind some husky liners, but the trim to fit wallace mart specials havent done me wrong.

Yes, as far as I know they are the same, with the newer version having wheels.
Mine is the old one w/o wheels, but same size/shape 'bucket'.

 

Ive been running the standard 6 gal crapsman shop vac for a long while. I seem to replace the broken ones with another same new one.
I did however buy a vac master wall mounted vac last summer for vehicle and garage duty. It’s SUPER quiet and has a remote turn-on on the tip of the hose which comes in handy. I love it.

 

RIGID shop vacs are the way to go. We put them through hell on the job site and they just wouldn’t die.

 

Yeah, I think you have two votes for the small Rigid. It's always had plenty of volume for me. Filters are a little expensive. Otherwise it's awesome.

Have you already run your CAT5/6e cable or are you just going to fish it through the wall?

 

Using the house vac as a wire chase would be cool. But, sadly, no network cable in this house. Pure wifi mesh. Works fine. F it.

 

Wiring the first floor will be easy. Crawlspace is a walk space.

 

Current unit is a 9gal/3.5HP. I'll be happy to see the power gain, we'll see how I feel about the loss of volume. I'll probably hit HD today and check 'em out.

RE: Flooring. I presume you're going to be going around and patching the floor so there's no rodent gaps around pipes coming up from the crawlspace, right? Rodent Overtake 2.0 prevention and all? Just cutting out a piece of 5/8" ply and using hole saws to cut out, then scabbing over the floor would suffice but if it were me I'd go nuts with some gd sheet metal. I hate rodents.

Wiring the upstairs is easy too, as long as you have a central chase to get cables from crawlspace to attic. It's when you have a middle floor, like my house does, that things become a pitfa.

 

Well hot damn. This is refreshing. I gotta say, Mobil1's support has really been on top of it. Talk about an experience with a company that makes me happy to be a loyal customer. While things didn't work out for my LSD using their synthetic fluid, I'll be damned if I don't spend the next several decades putting their product in my crankcase. At least I know they stand behind their product and put their money where their mouth is!

The thing about the smaller rigid is that you just empty it more and the overall user experience is better as it’s always pretty light.

plywood on top of 2x6’s then vinyl I believe. We foamed all the holes in stud bay cavities. We can also attack it from underneath now that the floor insulation is gone. We foam boarded the stems in the crawlspace so there is better visual access to the joists and subfloor. PO’s had 3 homes so weren’t around much. We also have a dog and that could help a little with picking a friendlier target even though said dog would never be able to catch a mouse.

no central vertical chase other than going outside. Assuming the fireplace is off limits . Could maybe get from the garage to the attic but house to garage isn’t easy because garage is lower and all concrete stem in the way.

I would like to redo this, though and that could be the ticket. It’s just not going to feed a closet or anything. The layout upstairs vs downstairs doesn’t have a great match.

Reason I ask: Rodents chewed right through the foam around my neighbor's HVAC lines, where they enter the house, from the compressor. Over here, if you don't plate off any hole, if you leave any crevice more than the thickness of two nickels, you're screwed.

We never had rats around here until some asshole moved into a rental across the street and was illegally running a takeout restaurant out of the house. They weren't on our side of the street until this winter. I've literally never seen one around my house, and I've got traps I keep up with "just in case" because I'm a paranoid MF ever since a squirrel got in through a hole the roofers left open about 10 years ago.

We did replace the obvious entry point with new wood. I don’t think we are tight to 2 nickels but we are better than before and the foam is anti rodent foam too. Future monitoring will be from below. Good to be vigilant.

The access was just super obvious, poor attention to detail and large holes a squirrel could fit through.

but, yeah, that would be sad if they move back into stud bays. I have lots to do in thr crawlspace, most obvious is pipe insulation.

 

Tracked down a noise that’s probably been pointing me elsewhere for a while. About to consult the FSM and you tube, but anyone ever replace this bearing and or assembly?
