Hello everyone I need some help. My 2003 tundras rear hub studs have all snapped off. I was wondering since it is a drum break how I could go about fixing this?

This is what happens when someone over-torques the studs, and can result in a rollover or major collision. Sometimes shear like this can be caused if you don't torque the lug nuts down enough - when they loosen, the stud shears off.

I went through similar with my rear wheel recentlyl, but they sheared when I tried to remove the wheel after a major flat tire event - whoever had this tire off last over-torqued the studs, which stretched the threads. You'll usually know you're there if the lugnut breaks loose, then either (A) gets tight again after a couple turns or (B) spins in place but won't come off. (A) is always a better situation than (B).

Studs snapping off like this is a common problem anyone who lets torque monkeys at shops using under-regulated impact hammers put their lug nuts on. I've replaced several in my lifetime. Here was my removal/install of new studs.

WARNING: You need to understand, your wheel studs are different lengths for front wheels vs. rear wheels. Not everyone at the auto parts store knows this and may give you the wrong length stud. Ask them to verify it's for <front/rear, whichever this is dealing with>. EDIT: See Dorman's part numbers in my follow-up reply below

And, seriously, just go out and buy a stud setter if you've never done this before, the local auto parts store will have one. Google for "Wheel stud installer", the one Lisle makes is something everyone has in their toolbox for days like this.

PS: If you don't have a feel for how many ugga-duggas you need to use when installing wheels, invest in a torque wrench, and watch a video on how to use it, and more importantly, how to STORE it when you're done using it. I don't recommend using handheld devices to install lug nuts, air, electric or otherwise!

Throw your impact away if you did that. Definitely don’t drive that!

I didn't know this. What is the reason they are different lengths?

I presume it's because rear is drum and front is not. IIRC the difference is like 10-20mm or something.

I ordered a new lug nut and wheel stud for my 06 RWD last week using my local Toyota dealer website using my Vin #. The stud is part #9094202052 - the website said for Left, Right Front and Rear axles. Did I get the wrong part to replace the stud on my rear axle?

Wheel Lug Stud (Left, Right, Front, Rear)

I dunno. I went with Dorman on the studs. Dorman is who a lot of OEMs use to manufacture parts like this.

Here are the Dorman part nums:

    Wheelhun comments are the best.

a friend of mine in highscool gave me top dollar for my '88 jeep comanche my grandpa had given me. I had fixed it up, and kept it mostly stock, but when he bought it he had pepboys racing seat and 6 pt harness & steeringwheel, and the discount tire AR steelies and big tires, and a different stereo setup (mine was 120v home stereo stuff on an inverter), but he got t-boned after a week after the new wheels (that discount installed) and when he got hit it shattered all 20 studs (probably not hub centric wheels) and discount had to pay him almost double what he paid, for injury. I've only taken loose wheels ever since. Half because i dont trust their torque sticks, and half because i dont want em to scuff my wheels.

Did the OP spell hub incorrectly or was the title changed to match @Sunnier ’s comment? :monocle:

I’m too late to the party as usual.

I wonder if Attila put that wheel on. Or maybe he tried to take it off.
