The counterweights are pretty big. Could be an image perception too. I was just impressed with the size compared to other crankshafts I've seen in V6 motors.

If I’m not mistaken, the crankshaft counterweight furthest in the pic grenaded

That disassembled engine doesn't look so special to me.

What I'm picking up on (on my smartphone) is the haphazard way the engine parts are being laid around. The entire engine assembly probably costs north of $10k, and those parts are just laying around, can't even put them in heavy duty totes with some padding? Are those the camshafts in the background on top of a cardboard box being held down by oil jugs? TF?

Almost looks like the parts under the block are sitting in a pool of old oil....

Agree, they could be a bit more organized...

I thought I heard that entire engine including turbos is about $30k+? I saw it on another post where guy drove through deep water and grenaded his engine, not sure if this number is accurate.

Well it’s a V6 so it probably needs the big counterweights because of how unbalanced V6’s are.

I also see 4 main bearings tasked with supporting higher forces than the previous Gen V8 that had 5 main bearings to handle those forces.

If Toyota had bothered to develop an inline 6 there would be 7 main bearings to take that load. As well as inherent primary balance, and a single cylinder head, and less camshafts, and less complication to the timing chains.

What we all needed was for Toyota to stop pissing in the wind with V6’s because they’re no longer relevant in FWD applications when turbo I4’s exist. In a RWD or 4X4 longitudinal layout a V6 isn’t particularly advantageous because engine length is no longer much of a constraint.

If I were king of Toyota trucks and SUV’s and Lexus…. the V35A-FTS wouldn’t exist in current form. It would look like a I6 version of the I3 found in the GR Corolla, for cars and low hood line vehicles it would have identical bore and stroke to the I3 to make a glorious 3.2L I6 than can rev. Trucks and other body on frame SUV’s would get a tall deck version with an increase in bore diameter and stroke to yield 3.6L tuned for torque production.

    Which boggles my mind.

For starters that Ram is now rated as the most reliable 1/2 ton, and secondly that Ram of all manufacturers will probably have the best turbo sixer gasoline engine in a 1/2 ton in front of what is probably the best overall automatic transmission.

What kind of bizzaro bullshit world is this?

I have hesitated on pulling the I6 out of my crawler and installing my LS 5.3L for this exact reason. Besides the head gasket that blew at 104K miles (and my fault..didn't turn on my engine fan soon enough), it has been a great motor for crawling. Now my choice in automatic transmissions has been the limiting factor (AW4). For dodge/Ram to pull the Hemi out of all the muscle cars/Trucks says something to me. They want power/torque and a whole lot of simplicity/reliability.

Well Ram is no longer Dodge but FCA. Good ol’ Fiat (Stellantis) has it down.

Tue transmission in the Tundra is a beast, it is found in the Lexus LC500. I bet with a little bit of tweaking via a tune will net a nice smooth shift point.

The Ford gen 3 Mustang Coyote was also said to be a bad motor with its new plasma lined cylinders. I’ve got 60k now tuned for E85 since 19k. No problems at all. Only thing that motor has asked for is spark plugs and oil changes at 3k due to fuel dilution. The transmission has a shift kit and tune, it drives like a manual transmission, shifts on point via the shift paddles.

I really thing this drive train just needs a refined tune and we’ll be in business.

i dunno i have a new gen3 tundra, and my laramie ram was better equipped then platinum tundras, didnt have any interior issues, exceeded EPA mpg, and actually looked like a 50k+ truck on the inside instead of just 2 shades of plastic grey everywhere....

like ive posted, i regret trading in my ram for the tundra, ive owned quite a few toyotas since 1987, shame on me thinking they would actually improve on their quality fit and finish and live up to their name

im out of town and driving my aunts 2014 camry, I helped my aunt buy this in like 2014-2015 for like $28k, the 3 huge gripes I have with my tundra are the door/window seals, the door lock switch and interior trim pieces, the camry with 75k miles still have better door/window seals, the door lock switch is better designed with nicer detents when you lock/unlock (doesnt feel like a toy), and no awkward trim pieces not lining up or flashing anywhere on all the plastic interior pieces.

im about to take pics of my 2010 camry and just show everyone wtf im talking about vs the gen3 tundra, toyota quality fit and finish on this gen3 is just lacking and gone like 5 steps backwards imo vs a 9 year old and 13 year old toytoa.

i actually really like the gen3 powerplant engine/tranny combo, the exterior looks awesome imo, but absolutely everything else from ride quality to fit and finish and mpg is just meh

I wouldn't be surprised if the entire engine assembly is somewhere between 10k and 30k.
I'm talking about everything laying around their shop, not just a long block.

What if someone knicks one of those camshafts? They're just sitting there under oil jugs!

Then Toyota could have an actual Toyota straight 6 for their Supra and they could build the Supra themselves.

Volvo has had transversal I5 in its cars for about 15 years before switching to I6 that was even shorter than I5. They moved back to turbo I5 as a replacement for "weak" N/A I6 before fully replacing all their engines with I4.

High power versions of I6 were tuned up to 350 HP and 370 lb-ft, which brings it very close to 3UR...

Put an inline-5 instead of V6, and you don't need to emulate that fake V8 sound... People are keeping their old Volvo because the exhaust sounds so sweet.

Had an inline 5 in a Jetta that was super torquey. Fun to drive, lacked some guts on the upper end that a turbo and VVTi could have remedied. Great motor and pretty reliable. My in-laws took theirs to almost 200k miles with only the electric fans failing 3 or 4 times.

Have a 230k miles engine in 270k car, had to rebuild it couple of years ago after it burnt the exhaust valve. And transmission. And transfer case. And steering rack. Can count on and on...

For that and other reasons I still prefer to have a huge V8 that is regularly loaded maybe for 15-20% only, and thus have a very long predicted life span. Gen 2.5 Tundra in my use case is generally underutilized and hopefully will leave longer than Volvo that was precisely built to last exactly 10 years and then it falls apart at once.

Someone I know has to replace the driver side front headlight assembly on a '22 due to road debris hitting it.
The headlight is $1200 not including taxes and labor to change it out if he uses the dealer.
Has to come from Vancouver - I guess where the port is.
I have to imagine an engine whole is worth more than 9 headlight assemblies ?
    Just saying....crazy times.

Yeah, the parts that are laying around that shop are additional parts not usually included in an "engine" bought from Toyota. So, that's a lot of money laying around in pieces.

BTW the LED headlight for my wife's Corolla is also $1200, but we only paid $20,750 for the car new, meaning two headlights would be nearly 12% the original cost of the car!

Headlights are becoming some of the most expensive parts of any vehicle. They're no longer a simple glass housing with a halogen bulb.
Headlights have become not only a design FEATURE, but they are highly impactful to IIHS Safety Ratings.

Things like this lead to the increase in prices for vehicles many of you are noting as concerning. More tech, More safety, More cost.

I was quoting in Canadian Loonies. $1200 cdn dollars = that's $1600 us dollars.
i know the Toyota pricing is not a direct exchange ratio but that is ridiculous.
What gets me about that engine picture is not the Big Kahunas on that crankshaft.
(How do they keep them balanced?)
But what are the those Oil containers doing lying on their sides on toP of - are those pistons ? cant be.
They must be full since the engine is I assume empty of oil.
