So, for those of use with the base instrument panel that does not appear to be able to show engine or transmission oil temperatures I am going to try to connect up my Scangauge 2 and see if I can program custom Xgauges for those parameters. But first I thought I'd check here to see if that wheel has already been invented. Anyone here been there done that yet?

I use my scangauge 2 for transmission temp monitoring. I’m not sure about oil temp, it depends if the tundra actually has a sensor to read the oil temp or not which I never looked into. I had to try a few different x gauge codes until I found the ones that would read. There should be one for ATF pan temp and ATF torque converter temp. If the temp changes rapidly when you’re on the throttle with the converter unlocked you know you probably have the converter one programmed and not the pan. It works pretty well once you find the right codes to program.

I was hoping someone like you could tell me the codes that worked. It is a PITA to just go through them all until you hit on it. If you get a chance, please have a look at your SC2 and write down what you have in there.

As for engine oil temp, the digital gauge cluster can display that along with trans oil temp in the "tow gauges" view, I believe. So, it seems to have an engine oil temp sensor.

These are the trans temp xgauges reported by a gen 2.5 member here. I guess I may start with those if I can't get that info here.

Ooof, that was so long ago I don’t have them recorded anywhere. I’m not near my truck until this evening but I suppose I may be able to go in and view them on the scangauge itself. If those were reported to work by someone else I’d try those first for sure, I doubt it’s different from one generation to the next. If the trucks were different manufacturers then I’d say they would probably be different.

Yes, you'd have to view them on the device. But no problem. I'll go try to reinvent the wheel. ;-) And if successful I'll post them here. The ones I listed might work but there are actually several choices. I remember programming for my Tacoma and had to try 3 different ones, all for Toyota CANSF, before it worked. Now what would be cool is if the ones I have in there for my Tacoma work. Can't be that lucky, can I?

well the pids should be there since you can display a temp guage on the full digital center screen for the trans an oil on my non hybrid platinum.

just a matter of finding the new ones (they will be different than the 2.5 gens if they follow suit when the 3rd gen tacoma came out they were completely different than the 2nd gen)

Yeah, I am sure it will work. I am just trying to get the cheat sheet on the codes!

yeah i havent looked into hooking up my torque app yet to scan the pids.

maybe do that this weekend while doing attempt #2 to get techstream running.

i kow for the 5th gen 4runner, 2nd gen tacoma, 2nd gen tundra, the trans temp pid was the same for all 3 vehicles.

i wonder if anyone has the pids for newer lexus vehicles that may cross over

The new ScanGauge 3 apparently can configure these Xgauges automatically. Nice feature but I like the form factor of the old SG2. I like to mount them right on top of the steering column.

I just updated my TechStream to V 18, but haven't tried to connect it yet. I have a Tactrix adapter and cable. Worked fine on my old Tacoma so hopefully will also work on the Tundra. What happened on try #1 with TS for you?

With my JB4 I can monitor transmission temp. It runs kinda high, but I imaging those are the operating parameters. I’ve seen the range from 202 to 217 when in sport mode.

wish I could see oil temp, I can see coolant temp amongst other metrics.

OK, I can confirm that the codes in the Toyota/Lexus 2016+ 3.5L table at the link work. I have transmission temp 1 and engine oil temp programmed and displaying successfully. Near as I can tell we must not have that second PID for TF2 torque converter temp in our Tundra 10 speeds since I could not get that to work in spite of multiple tries and checks... unless maybe the XGauge code for that needs to be updated for our model.

Wow, that does seem high. On my old 2009 Tacoma I don't think it ever got above 165 or so at highway speeds in the summer. On my short low speed drive today in the Tundra with some long idling whilst programming the ScanGauge I am seeing only ~150 TFT and oil temps so far. I wish I had got a baseline for the TFT before I installed my cat shield. It has vents but makes sort of an enclosed space around the transmission. I would have liked to see if there were any differences before and after. But being only 150 after idling for 15 minutes after being fully warmed up is not bad being that the trans is pretty close to those cats. I'll see what mine does on the highway later today.

I generally have mine set up to display water temp, oil temp, trans temp and voltage. Truck has gauges for water temp and voltage but the digital readout is more precise.

These new 10 speed trannies seem to favor high temps.

on my 19 A10 Mustang it runs from 192 thru 207 if I’m beating in it.

    work truck observations:

2021 F-150 A10 run hot, 202 to 215, depending on terrain and weather conditions.

    2022 Chevy Silverado Z-71 192- 202.

Just got back from a 70-75mph 50 mile highway run and did see those somewhat higher temps, maxed out at 201F. Under steady state conditions, the coolant, engine oil, and trans fluid all converge within a few degrees, which actually makes sense.
