My oldest wants to be a pilot when he grows up. Maybe I’ll get some free flights 20 years from now.

 

I wanted to be a pilot too! Helicopter school was prohibitively expensive without qualifying for grants (which there are none for straight white men) or going military. Almost went military, but I talked to an honest recruiter and he said the best that could be guaranteed would be that I could work on helicopters, but flying was a gamble. I guess my point is, I hope your oldest fits a minority group for a grant or is pinching pennies!

 

I started a savings for both of them when they were born. When they turn 18-20ish it’s going to be up to them what they use it for. College, flight school, down payment on a house etc…. I’m sure he will change is mind a few times but has been a common theme for the last year or so. We are going to go for a flight in a families Cessna 170 this summer so will see what he thinks after that.

 

Not a jet; you'll be lucking if it's got 2 props (or one big one)!!!!

 

Maybe an airboat. It might work on the snow and would make a hell of a story.

Grab your fixed wing private; then your commercial; then an instrument rating; then instructor rating (all fixed wing)... it's about 1/2 of helicopter hourly rates.... then once you have those ratings, start doing private lessons to cover paying for the helicopter hourly rates while you add the necessary helicopter ratings

Oh @20GR8 Super .... if he gets serious about it, most folks will tell you to pay 'by the rating' not 'by the hour' for lessons/stick time and know that you can generally negotiate those fees up front especially if you are paying in full for training time for each rating!

Another option is doing it through the Guard... if he's not looking to go full military enlistment.

Also, you can get student loans for pilot program as well!

I get where you're coming from, but I did everything I could, and it wasn't financially possible without putting others at risk.

Looked at loans, and even with an 805 credit score they wouldn't loan without a cosigner, and they would only loan about 60% of the average cost.

I'm not being negative. I am being realistic and sharing my honest experience in hopes of helping another kid achieve a dream I had to give up.

I’m also a straight white guy and when I was going through my private pilot license I quickly realized there wasn’t much of anything besides high interest loans as well. Pretty much sucked. I didn’t wanna do the military either but tried my hand at the Coast Guard office after showing them my current private license and asked what the chance would be to become a pilot. The recruiter told me if I was lucky and everything went right I could see a PIC seat in about 11years! No thanks.
