Makes zero sense? Why? Proven reliability, and it's accepted already the 3rd gens are having problems. Makes sense to me. He should wait a couple years before foaming at the mouth to get into another 3rd gen.

A trade up at cost?? Holy moly dude they owe him a truck, they should let him trade in for a new one at NO COST.

You wouldn't be afraid of getting another 3rd gen, I would be afraid. I'm appalled with how adamantly people will put on blinders just to support Toyota.

You know how the saying goes. Fool me once...

An SR5 to a Limited would be trading up and I’m sure if the OP wanted a previous he would’ve done so from the beginning, if it were me I’d rather buy the 2004 that you have if we’re talking reliability

yeah I suppose you're right about previous gens, he would've gone for that in the first place if that's what he wanted. Didn't know he wanted to move to a limited. And if he just had to have the newest thing then I guess the tundra is the way to go. The tundra problems are still mild compared to the ford/gm/fiat truck horror stories.

I guess my concern would be trading the truck in after a rebuilt motor at low miles on a newly developed truck. What kind of $$$ would you get for a truck with known issues? I would be screaming at Toyota to get me out of the truck free and clear for their unreliability, which they are typically known for. I would have zero confidence in the truck after this. Just me.

OP, is your truck paid off? if not, have they said anything about paying the monthly payment the 2 months its down? I would hate to be paying for something I can't use. I don't know if I missed it, but I assume they gave you a loaner.

    Lots of stuff!
I am on the other side of the fence on a major repair. If it is fixed and handed back to you fixed, it should be a good runner. You will also have the dealership and Toyota looking after you to make sure the fix is holding well.

They probably won’t do anything about the 2 months of payments. Perhaps a loaner could fill that void so you have a vehicle to use.

The best case is a swap to a new truck which you could press them on with the lemon laws that you have at your disposal.

I hope this turns out to your satisfaction. A positive outcome will help with all of us Gen 3 owners who have our fingers crossed!

I actually did the 1 Pay Lease option (and prepaid for extra miles) on the truck. Don’t typically lease but since the 3rd Gen was such a departure from the previous Gen I wanted to make sure I loved it first before fully committing (I took delivery in December 2021, so I had one of the first Tundras my dealer was allocated). The remote dealer did not have a loaner available and my local dealer does have a loaner option, however, the largest loaner they have is a Rav4, which won’t work for us, so I’m currently using one of my other vehicles. I think it would be nice to get some kind of credit since a similar vehicle wasn’t available as a loaner (doesn’t necessarily have to be a Tundra; I would have been content with a Highlander or something similar in size).

If you leased then you're clear since you don't own the truck - TFS (or whatever leasing company) does. IMO just take the repaired truck, drive it until lease end, and then walk away from it.

Despite what others say here (I'm from Tacoma World, these threads are all EXACTLY the same) they are not going to give you a new truck. It always amuses me to see the pack of birds jump up and say "I won't accept anything less than a NEW TRUCK! WHOOOOARRRR!" Same goes for "inconvenience" or "make it right" - not gonna happen.

Since you don't own it, why stress about "resale", "diminished value" or "trading it in" ?

Is "WHOOOOARRRR" the Tacoma world version of fake V8 sounds? Never seen someone say that in this forum

    Yep.

It’s a lease, and as it turns out for the OP a good thing he did lease it.

Drive until the lease is up and dump it.

In 2007, my wife's leased 2007 Impreza had to be lemon-lawed. That occurred right when the new generation Impreza dropped, and to get similar options as the 07 in the new gen 08 was $2500 more. Subaru USA wrote a check to the dealership so we could get the new car at the same payment as the older one. Oh, and BTW the head gasket failed on the 2008 at the end of the lease. Not our problem!

More recently, I had a 2016 GTI that the DSG transmission failed at 20k. Also a lease car.
VW installed a rebuilt DSG, but the tech who worked on my car did a crappy job, forgot to reassemble several underhood items, like the air intake assembly, etc. I discovered the poor workmanship when I got home, made them tow the car back and fix it.

I tried to get VW to end the lease early, but they wouldn't budge. They said they made right by their warranty.

My fiance bought her 2011 Impreza used and expecting the head gasket work to be needed, and paid an extra $500 for warranty. Both sides ended up needing custom machining work to replace the head gaskets with nice metal ones to last the lifetime of the vehicle, something like $4k of work, she paid $100 total for the experience.

Now I just gotta find the loose rattling heat shield underneath somewhere and bolt that down with red LocTite...

Bought my truck used a few months back. Nothing other than regular maintenance on the Carfax and it was dealer serviced. Drives great. Just got around to creating a profile at the actual Toyota site and found my truck had similar issues at 35k miles…

damn, yota dealers do this too now I guess - just forget to update major service like r&r the bottom block

can you go back to the dealer who sold this to you and ask them how this vin was missed, it sounded like a mfg buyback if owner was unhappy - or he traded it in cuz he was unhappy. But still that issue should have been collected as a major record for that VIN.

i have seen this run around in the ram ecoD, a few 2nd hand resold ecoD were lemonlaw, or mfg buy backs (they had oil weight issues, that wore out crank bearings prematurely first year and eventually changed the oil weight spec) unfortunately the new owners had to find out the hard way like this guy

Back in the early 2000's Toyota did something similar to me. I bought an off-lease Solara V6 MT that was touted as "TCUV" Toyota Certified Used Vehicle. Part of the Toyota certification is that it'd never has been in an accident, but I eventually found out that the Solara was darn near totaled prior to me buying it. Didn't show up on Carfax because it happened right before being returned on lease.

I went all the way to Toyota corporate, because TCUV clearly stated "never in an accident" and the later Carfax said it had major frame damage. After 3 months of hoping Toyota would make it right, Toyota USA told me to "get a lawyer"

What was the mileage on the service record and what is the current mileage? The Toyota record system will note the mileage (and the date which is shown) on each record. Just curious since that was back in Sept.
