I changed my oil at 2k miles. I am newer to changing my own oil, but am quite mechanically handy. I filled with 7.7 quarts with a new filter. After the change, oil level was quite high. Somewhere in the .5-1qt overfilled. I had to drain the overfilled oil until getting the right level on the dipstick.

I have 2 theories why, and would some thoughts on this:

    1) when draining, I drained the pan, reinstalled the plug with a new crush washer. Then drained and swapped the filter. Could this order of operations left over 0.5 qt of oil left that ran into the pan when I removed the filter?

    2) I’m using a K&N oil filter. Could the capacity of this be different than the oem? I can’t imagine it would be significantly different.

Did you put some oil in the filter before you spun it on?

I'd recommend OEM right now on it. (IF there is an issue you dont want toyota to deny things because you used a non OEM filter)
When doing it, write on the filter the date and mileage of when the work was done.

You likely didn't drain all the oil.

I get the vehicle up to operating temp before changing the oil, give it ample time to drain, and STILL fill about .5 quarts low and then check and top off.

There will always be some residual oil remaining in engine. This amount can change with temperature, slope vehicle is parked on etc. I always check the level before adding the last quart or two. And add as necessary. Agree with using oem filters. Especially in regards to k&n.

When checking your oil did you:

    - check it on flat level ground?
    - pull the dip stick, wipe it clean, reinsert and then remove and read the level?

The lesson here is never just fill with a certain amount. Put ~7 qts in, run the motor briefly, shut it off, let it settle, then fill to the mark.

Did you run the engine for 30 seconds after filling it back up? The oil filter has to fill back up, which will transfer a good .5 quart from the sump where the dipstick measures the oil level. Also, I agree with Raylo’s method.

Truck only took a little over 7 quarts when I changed mine the first time, I used the OEM filter.

The only issue with that video is to deploy the air dam, raise the wiper lever up towards the ceiling and hold oppose to towards the driver. Minor infraction.
