Maryland dealer just asked for $10k over MSRP to build me a TRD PRO that they have allocated

Need a thread on crazy dealerships. Maryland dealer just asked for $10k over MSRP to build me a TRD PRO that they have allocated. I told him I just saw a Pro on the lot and a Capstone and several other Tundra hybrids in Virginia for MSRP and wasn't interested. He ran off to find the next sucker...

Sounds weird. That's the first I've heard about a dealer charging markups

10k doesn't sound as bad as that Rav4 Prime at an Oakland dealer with 40k over MSRP, Listed at 95k last year...

Toyota corporate’s fault. They love taking all that positive equity that you’ve built up in your old tundra/Toyota when you trade it in for a new one. So new gens get unnecessary $15k msrp increases and f/u markups

The solution is (was) to preorder. I waited 13 months for my 22 TRD PRO and paid MSRP to the penny.

Good old Capitalism! Dealers will charge it if people will pay it. If enough people won't pay it, prices fall. That simple.

I had a dealer in Alabama tell me it was a $5000 deposit to get on the list, and then a $10,000 market adjustment because I was not in state. If I lived in Alabama, then it was only $5000. If the vehicle hit their lot, then i did not want it, then I would lose the deposit. Before then, they would refund it. They said they had been burned several times. Like that vehicle I decided I would not want would not sell in 24-72 hours if they put it on their website as available.

I told them they are too greedy.

It’s still kind of funny how buyers have been conditioned to think MSRP is now a good deal.

Right? In 2020 I paid almost $9K less than MSRP….and was told it was a “good” deal - and mine wasn’t the best deal I’d seen! LOL

The only half saving grace is trade in/private party values for trade ins are so much higher than they would normally be so it sort of equals out the bottom line. If you don't have something to trade, you are just screwed lol.

No thanks, I'll take a freer market any day. No one is required to buy a vehicle from x, y, or z dealership that's marking up prices, and there are plenty of dealers selling at MSRP, and even a few willing to drop some of their fees for good customers, inconveniences, etc.

It’s what got us here in the first place. And wait till the market drops, is dropping and they are left holding a huge negative equity. Now those that traded a 2 year old truck for the new shiny toy has to wait or pay the negative.
