So I went to help a guy jump his truck today and when i popped the hood the first thing he said is dang they make these with a diesel now. LMAO!!! I said no still gas. Then he told me I needed to get it looked at. I just looked at him......then at his truck. 2012 ish Silverado and proceeded to shake my head. :D

I’ve been told that before, thousands of miles later, no problems.

Most of you guys I would think have never owned a diesel. These trucks sound Nothing like any diesels I have or have owned in the past. Yes my 5.7 has the typical rumble sound of a well built V8, But I can tell you "Real diesel's Rattle". Maybe newer diesels conceal the true sound. You hear my 03 Cummins Turbo, built with mods and Straight pipe, even at idle, you will immediately know it aint no "gasser".

Normal. Was told its something with the VVT. Also my wife’s 6cyl lexus sounds the same.

Only diesel I've ever owned was a 99 7.3 powerstroke. And I would agree the 5.7 sounds nothing like it. On the flipside I didn't say the 5.7 sounds like a fully built Cummins with a straight pipe. With the hood up listening to the motor it just has a slight rattle or clank. Not like I'm about to try and roll coal all the way down the block.

Mine is loud as hell, and I'll be the one to admit I took it to the shop at about 10k, they told me it was fine. They even had another '21 tundra in the shop that they compared mine to and said they both sounded the same.
14309 miles and its getting louder.
Guys I am a crane operator. I burn diesel for a living...no it doesn't sound just like a diesel but I can see the comparison. The sound kinda rolls over like a diesel...still sounds unhealthy being gas.

I know what mine sounds like, so when it doesn't sound like it normally does then I'll start to worry. 2007 CM, 221k

With 0w-20 oil it sounds like a Yanmar tractor engine, with 5w-30 it sounds like a normal v8. It's probably also from the type of aluminum in the pistons. I doubt they could just use regular old cast pistons because the stroke on the thing is longer than a 454 big block and the piston speeds are quite high for a street engine.

Haha! My mother in law said that about mine as well. At idle with the TRD dual exhaust, I can see how a non toyota person can mistake the normal toyota tick sound for a diesel. ;)

if you think a 5.7 is noisy, try a 4.0 in the 4runner.

Mine gets some timing chain slap when it's cold and it sure sounds like...something. Trying some Seafoam treatment now. Unfortunately, I bought my 14 Platinum with a limited maintenance history.
