Oil change at 5K or 10K?

Not gospel, but additional confirmation for those of us that have been doing this for many years, that extended oil changes can and do have an effect on an engine's longevity.

 

I'm in a bind that I'm away from home 7 months out of the year and tow a trailer to get her. One oil change at home, one away. After the freebees end I'll find a local shop that will allow me to do my inspection while the truck gets an oil change. You can bet my torque wrench, oil filter tool and spare crush washers will be with the oil and filter when I take it in.

 

I don’t think any of his videos are clickbait. They’re extremely long and generally full of good info. Plus, he actually discusses the question or topic in the video title.

If you’re providing your own oil for the dealer to use, then it seems you at least agree with him when he says that dealerships use bulk oil that they can get as cheap as possible.

 

The gummed up rings and ring lands are a dead giveaway.

 

Isn't all 0w20 full synthetic?

 

Apparently at least Castrol has a semi-synthetic "Castrol GTX Ultraclean 0W-20 Synthetic Blend".

Not sure of the point of this oil when Wally World sells "Super Tech" fully synthetic 0W-20 at a cheaper price. That is, if the lowest price is more important than the brand.

 

What do you have against the car nut? His videos are very informative and great in my opinion.

Does he want more clicks? Yes why not, it's a good way of running a business. And get paid more.

But his content is great and is even entertaining to me

 

Can you provide a link where carnut says Toyota uses cheapest bulk oil? I've watched lots of his videos and haven't heard this. He's always recommending to use dealer and use Oem Toyota parts and Oem Toyota oil and filters.

I'm sure shady dealers exist and plenty but not all are.

 

Oh I've watched it. He's lacking on information. In one video he claims dealers may be using cheap bulk oil. If he was the one that did all the oil changes on the Camry then maybe I'd trust him more but he is going on heresay information. YouTube has become the new reality TV.

 

I have nothing against the guy it's just that he's lacking in real information and he is entertainment. Granted Toyota did produce some engines that experienced problems with oil sludging but don't think the Camry was one of them. Using the wrong oil would cause the type of problems he saw. 10,000 miles on the correct filter and oil would not unless the engine was operated under severe conditions. I'm just not one to believe anything I read and only half of what I see.

 

He was quite clear that the Camry in question had been meticulously maintained. His conclusions regarding extended oil service intervals are not radical, in fact they are supported on other forums of other makes.
You might want to acquaint yourself with the Toyota "oil sludge" lawsuit that was apparently settled in 2007. Lots of good reading regarding engine failures while following prescribed maintenance schedules.

 

I was at the dealer today getting my oil changed and the transmission re-programmed. I was asking the service advisor about the 10k changes and he said of course that this is what Toyota advises and he works here and so on, he has to go by the rules, blah blah blah -

But if it was his truck he wouldn’t go 10k in a million years.

 

10,000km (6000miles) and it hasn't let me down yet.

I’m still on the fence with doing the first oil change on mine.
I currently have 653 miles. The dealership stated wait till the 10k, supposedly the engines are broken in already at the factory. I don’t foresee how that would be efficient to their manufacturing practice.
Anyhow, what ye say brethren Tundra fellers. What oil and filter? OEM filter? Oil brand ? I’m thinking Amsoil or Penzoil Platinum. Fixing to swing by Toyota for a filter. 5 bux…. Not bad. Heard Wix is good also.

 

It doesn't quite matter which oil and filter you go with right now. If you want to take an extra step, just get oil changed with any synthetic oil at about1k after the initial break in. Mobil1 is what Toyota uses. All it does is flush out any break in debris etc...

Keep in mind you have two free oil changes from the dealer, and you can use it at any time. You can insist to have them use your 10k free oil change at 1k miles. Many done this, and my dealer offered as well.

 

Maybe 1k is too early, but I'll do another change at 5k miles, with subsequent 5k change internals.

If you'll use 5-30 weight oil, and turbos blow up, dealership may do an oil test and won't warranty it after seeing it's not recommended 0-20w oil. Plus you'll have to find proof that you used 0-20w oil on case of any warranty claims.

Furthermore, any benefits of 30 wt oil in this new engine may be hard to back up with hard facts as engine is so new. I'll stick to the recommend 0-20 oil changes at 5k intervals to be on a safest side

 

I don't think this is true. I’ve seen too many new engines with lots of shavings at 5k miles. Diffs, too.

Yes the manufacturers should be able to design a precise, tight, well-made drivetrain, but to me, the reality is that there is a targeted price point that determines service life and parts’ tolerances.

 

Early UOA usually shows elevated wear metals and particle counts. Oil is cheap. I changed at 500ish and again around 3k. Plenty of shavings both times. I stick to 5k now.

 

Earlier in this thread it's stated that 0W20 is because of inane government policies on the 2nd gen, and other countries with the same engine use other oils including 5W30 just fine. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing is still going on with the 3rd gen.

That said, the points about being in warranty period are valid.

Me, with my 2015, I'm long out of warranty, and am using 5W30 just fine, 0W20 label and all.

I’m a little OCD, don’t trust the dealer to do my lil changes. So I’ll opt to do my own oil changes. Reading further in this thread I will probably do one at 1k & another @ 3k.
Oils cheap, these trucks are not.

 

I concur, I have a 19MY Ford Mustang GT, changed the diff and tranny fluid at about 60k.

found plenty of metal shavings in both the tranny according to the tech and I did the diff myself which I found a good chunk of metal shavings on the magnetic plug.

Companies just trying save money of maintenance. I’ll pick up the tab, I’d rather have my vehicles last longer.

 

So I would not have an issue using a thicker oil, not sure how this engines internals are is specd In reference to the oil veins/oil passages.

also don’t know what affect it my have the variable valve timing system also.

I suspect this very thin oil is recommended due to CAFE fuel economy requirements. Less engine drag to free up a couple of mpg.

I may be wrong, the engine seems to have plenty of ways to compensate for extremely high temperatures. This engine has been around since 2017 in Lexus.

Great post, do you know if there is a TRD synthetic filter available? I Looked and couldn't find one in the forum or online. I read that the Toyota/Denso is a dual paper element and the articles suggest a synthetic oil filter due to the close tolerances of the turbo shaft and possible contaminants causing wear and tear among other things.

 

I've been told by a toyota master mechanic to always use Toyota filters.

A lot of people think oil is negotiable, as long as it's synthetic. (I'm in the Amsoil camp.)

Filters, I always use Toyota, and I always change it when I change the oil.

 

Still trying to figure out why a tundra oil change requires 37 special pieces and parts. Just put spin on oil filters for the love. Toyota switch to 10 K oil change recommendations because it’s such a massive pain in the ass process On these trucks. If I had to do these oil changes all day long I’d recommend 10 K too LOL

With the help of these tools the oil change is easy with no mess. Yes there are still more steps than a traditional spin on filter but these things make it easily tolerable.

 

I searched for one also from TRD or from K&N. No luck….
