I am terrible with names of people I meet, and it’s not because I don’t care…there are people I’ve met and really enjoyed talking with and still needed to “meet” them 2-3 times before I remembered their name.

My wife is a birthday savant - or really dates of any kind but especially birthdays.

I’m just one of those people that retains 99.9% of what I read. Numbers, diagrams, schematics, words. I’m a slow reader, but that’s because if I read something I process it - I mentally evaluate, consider, absorb, connect the dots, whatever. And when I do that, I retain it and can recall it…perhaps not verbatim, but certainly enough to summarize or paraphrase it back to someone. And numbers/ statistics/facts even more than anything else. That’s where my username comes from - a good friend and coworker started jokingly calling me Rainman because of it, and I kind of adopted it as a part of who I am.

Right, but when you read it on here, can you keep track of who said it later? That's my struggle. I'll remember a story, or a comment (if I'm lucky) but not have the faintest idea which member said it. I wind up using the search for phrases, or the arrows at the bottoms of posts, or going back through my own responses to see who I quoted on something. My retention is poo. LOL

It's an awesome skill that you have, and I dig that you've claimed it and own it.

It does depend, but for the most part yes. Or well enough that I can go back and find it.

one thing that can mess with me here is that I’ve gotten to know so many people as their real name that a lot of times when I see their username I simply read it as their real name. Like truly learning a foreign language - you don’t “translate” but rather just think in that language… you don’t translate “baño = bathroom” but rather you see the word baño and your mind just pictures the bathroom - I have the same thing with the usernames (and even avatars to some extent) of a lot of people here. So if I actually read their post (I admit to just skimming over some posts), then I’ll retain it with who said it.

Ah, and I'm the opposite. The user name and avatar will stick, but the real name slips by for lots. And I am pretty sure this forum has the highest concentration of "Adams" I've ever seen. We are Legion, apparently.

@LarryDangerfield do you have any interest or experience with motorcycles? Random thought because of your adventures and such.

My wife's water broke 4 weeks early and they induced her right away because she hadn't had some shot that she needed yet. Only 11 days in NICU for us, though.

Similar issue here. I can remember something I read but not where exactly I read it. Probably doesn't help that I scroll past the names on a forum really fast and rely on profile pictures to know who posted something.

I also can't remember any details about a book I've only read once or a movie I've only seen once.

Opposite problem here. I absolutely cannot picture people as being their real names. Your name is not Casey, it's Rainman.

Adam's name is not Adam, it's Godzilla (sometimes). Etc.

Funny enough I hate motorcycles. Much prefer 4 wheels. Just feel so vulnerable and unsafe on them.

Understandable. I get that fear as well, but I'm wanting to conquer it. Slowly, but I want to. I just know it can be an economical way to get places for pictures and such.

“Economical”. That point has always made me laugh… Never had anyone show me how that magical fuel savings offsets even the maintenance and insurance on a bike…let alone the purchase price.

I must admit I know nothing about the insurance side, but (heavily dependent on the bike) the purchase price and maintenance are much more affordable than that of other off road capable street legal toys. The gas mileage is a bonus for sure.

Insurance on my bike was around $300 +/- a year. Don't remember Maintenace being that expensive?

That's only true if someone is buying it specifically to save money on gas, it'll never pencil out.
If a guy buys a toy (bike) and rides it to work or adventures, he "saves" money by not taking his truck.

Bike I want is $7,199 plus fees that put it to $7,999 out the door, oil change is every 8,000, maxed out insurance coverage was less than $700 a year last time I had a bike, and it gets 65MPG on the freeway but if you stay 65MPH or less it jumps to 75MPG.

Compared to a SxS thats hugely economical. Hell, it beats a reliable commuter car. Where it bites you is mods and gear.

I realize where you were coming from on the economical front now. You are correct, for people who just want to save on gas, 99 percent of the time buying a more fuel efficient vehicle is actually more expensive than driving the gas hog they already have.

I remember people here from their real names, if we interact. The ones who I text with are saved as their first name, then followed by their username here and Tundras.com
