Fellow 2.5 gen owners, now that the 3rd gen is out, do you find yourself more protective and more careful with your 2.5?

It's not that I didn't care before, but now that I can't replace it with a new one of the same thing if need be, I find myself driving slower and more paranoid about damage.

No. If there’s one truck that can be rode hard and put up wet with no fuss, it’s the 2007-2021 Tundra.

I bought mine to enjoy and put all the miles on that I can. The more miles off pavement and out of cell phone service, the better. :headbang:

Nope, not for one second. I actually see the 3rd gen and feel sorry for them. Seriously.

I will get one eventually, but it will take my engine burning more oil than fuel (and she drinks!) or rust in the floor boards. Guess I might be getting a 4th gen...

I wasn't referring to off-roading. I was thinking more along the lines of stuff that may lead to totaling it, like hitting deer or dealing with asshole drivers.

Not every place has deer hazards like we have here though. They are a major issue here after dark. Just not enough people interested in hunting around here anymore it seems.

Something serious happens to my 2.5 gen and I honestly don't know what I'd get to replace it. Probably see if I could find a very low miles 2.5 gen. The 3rd gen just doesn't appeal to me.

    Yes and no?

I treat it nicely….but because it deserves to be on its own merit.

I do worry about accidents and deer, more so because getting body work done with parts shortages takes 2 months these days. Also if mine got totaled, I’d be worried about getting reimbursed for my thousands spent on aftermarket parts. Agreed on the no desire for a 3rd gen. If I needed to replace mine I’d do the responsible thing for hauling my 32’ camper and get a 3/4 ton most likely.

I treat it pretty rough, because it doesn’t care. But when it falters, I’ll have no concerns in picking up a 3rd gen.

If something happens to my 2.5, I'll probably get it fixed.

I have a history of wrapping my car (not Tundra) around a boulder, buying a donor chassis, swapping all and everything of my good engine/transmission/drivetrain/interior/etc. And a few years after that had to do a full rebuild of engine, transmission and transfer case. Basically all the major parts are replaced or rebuilt now. The car is out of production for 15 years, but it still looks good and drives much better than new Fords. I'm getting a TIG welder to do some body panels in the future, when time comes for the old Swede to start rusting. Parts are harder to get these days, but I'd say we have about 20-30 years of parts availability for Tundra, new or from junk yard. In 30 years I won't be interested in vehicles.

I guess now that you mentioned it, I have some concern about parts / lead times / shortages if I did smack a deer or something. But I know where the deer trails are in my area, and I pretty much just slow down on my road. Plus I have one of 'em air darr whassles that have kept my front end Bambi-free *knocks on wood*

As for other drivers? I don't play with assholes. :notsure:

My plan is to drive mine until I can give it to my son when he gets his license in 7 years and then see what’s available then. So yeah, I worry about hitting a deer and we have a lot of deer in my area but other than being aware of my surroundings and getting lucky, not much else to do.

No it’s not really that big of a deal. 2.5 Gen Tundras are not exactly rare. Toyota sold 100-120k trucks a year, that means there are something like 800,000 Tundras around built between 2014-2021.

They will have a strong used market for years. If you total yours just get another one. The only thing you get with new is over inflated prices. To many people worry about buying used, especially Toyota. If taken care of they will literally run forever.

There is another one identical to yours (trim, color, ect) for sale somewhere in the US and will be for years to come. The only potential exception to this is Double Cab TRD Pros, they are not exactly easy to find.

I have a TPV (Tundra Preservation Vehicle) so really only use the Tundra for trips and camping right now. It still gets close to 12000 miles a year but I'm going to continue to do this until the TPV dies. When it does I will drive the Tundra full time and barring an accident the Tundra should last a long time.

Let's be honest. If you keep this thing clean and drive sub 50k a year, the truck will outlive most of us.

I drive under 10k a year. To hit a million miles I'd have to drive it 100 years.

Unlike some I don't fret when I hear creaks or bird shit hits my paint. Sometimes I even have a rock stuck in my tire tread and don't give a damn.

Yeah, life's good out here on the edge...

I would have a tough time finding a replacement for my low mile 2021. I don’t drive it on the heavily salted roads up here in MN. Just turned over to 2,016 miles the other day. I have no interest in a gen 3.

My 2006 (that I bought new) lasted 12 years and I sold it to my daughter. She has 300k+ miles on it, still going strong. I bought my 2018 new intending to keep it basically forever. I have 76k on it now but since I've retired, put less than 4k per year on it.

    It's all good.

Nope, like every vehicle I have I bought it to drive it. Then again, mine's not a daily driver, its dedicated to hunting and hauling, so its gonna be around a while unless something happens out of the blue, at which point I'll move on. I'll figure out what to replace it with when the times comes, until then not going to worry about it.

I treat my truck the same way now that I did back when it was brand new. And will still treat it the same 10 years from now if I still have it. It’s a vehicle. Not a person. Material items come and go. I treat it the same because no matter what it is, I’m spending hard earned money on it. It can easily be replaced by something else. I don’t understand why everyone acts like you’re sitting on a precious gold mine.

My main internal battle is not supercharging it for the reasons OP mentioned. As awesome as driving an SC tundra is do I really want to make the last naturally aspirated 5.7L tundra a boosted one? I feel like that's the biggest draw to tundras... The reliability factor of a stock 5.7

So do you treat it good, or just don't care about the truck you just spent hard earned money on? Having trouble following your logic.
