After Cam Tower Repair

    Hey everybody,

    I have a 2018 crew max with 46,000 miles that is currently at my local dealership getting the cam tower oil leak repaired. I know the cam tower issue has been extensively discussed on this forum, but I haven't seen much about people's experiences with their trucks following the repairs. Any issues? Did it run as well following the repair as it did prior? I guess my concern is that something gets missed/done improperly during such an extensive job that it will affect the longevity and reliability of the truck (which is why I bought the thing in the first place).

    I guess I’m the lucky one. :rofl:When I bought mine used off a Toyota lot I found out a different dealer had just done my cam tower seals. They removed the cab to do it. I discovered this after it kept starting on its own when put into neutral, or would shut off when I put it in reverse. Come to find out after taking it back to the dealer I purchased it from for diagnosis (twice) that they must not have properly drained the lines to the heater core when disconnecting them and coolant dripped down into the passenger side kick panel. It corroded a bunch of electrical components/relays etc. which was making it go haywire. No issues since though. I trusted it enough to invest in some pricey upgrades. It’s probably uncommon and I’m just the unlucky one. To add insult to injury, it’s seeping again 15k miles later. Doesn’t bother me though, it’s my 2nd tundra to have it and it’s truly inconsequential. No oil drips or loss between changes. More hassle than it’s worth to fix IMO.

    They are removing the cab. Sorry that all that happened! I really thought long and hard about even having it done because like you say, it was really inconsequential as it stood. I just didn’t want it to get worse. Glad to hear most people have had good luck after the repair.

    My 2018 has been seeping on the driver's side since 6k miles. The dealership agreed to fix both sides, but I waited and now I'm at 33k miles with the powertrain running in September. Still seeping but nothing dripping and five years of debating whether to fix it.

    The main cam tower thread has post repair issues, including situations like yours where it starts seeping again later. I went back to that thread and looked at my posts. The first few were right after I joined the forum, worrying about getting the leak and debating what I would do. Then I got the leak. Then I ruminated whether to fix it, which I'm still doing.

    I don't trust the dealership to not screw it up. I don't want a squeaky truck. Why fix it and hope they don't screw it up, only to have it seep again later? I have six months to decide, but it's unlikely I do anything about it.

    I had my 2014 done at 28k ish miles and had no issues. It remained dry when I traded the truck at around 75k ish miles. I had mine done because the oil was landing on my heat shield and burning, causing a bad smell and presented a fire hazard in my mind (not sure if it would have caused a fire but did not want to find out).

    I had both sides done at around 90k miles. Drove it almost 50k miles now and the engine still drives great. Knock on wood, it looks dry.
