Fire Extinguisher?

Put a 2.5 lb extinguisher on both sides of the truck

Yep, coworker had a brake line burst on his way back from lunch leading to a fire in the engine bay, grabbed an extinguisher from the office and used most of not all of it IIRC.

Also came across an irrigation controller that was arching, causing the surrounding shrubs/grass to catch fire, only had bottled water on hand that time, but spent 15 minutes or so stomping out/wetting the surrounding area to put out the shrub/grass fires (avoiding the electrical arching/fire)

 

Yes, I have used them several times and the small ones that are convenient to carry do go very fast. I don't recall the exact number but I've seen mine used and 5-6 others on a car fire before FD arrived. The police dept. I worked for stopped issuing the small ones all together. A small one beats nothing though!

My biggest concern at face value with the Eliment is how close the user needs to be to the fire, practically over it. The fires used in the demo videos are tame to say the least, except for the natural gas demo. It'd be safe to say a moist pillow case could have put 99% of those out. It would probably be ok for a small patch of grass, but a car fire gets crazy hot, very fast.

WTF! I promoted Element earlier in this thread but this is pathetic. I wonder why it did so poorly. It couldn't put out the most basic type of fires.

witnessed a t-bone some years ago. One of the cars the driver had his legs stuck under the steering wheel and we couldn’t get him out. Not great but manageable until the fire department showed up.

then the engine bay caught on fire and things got real scary real fast. Fire department still hasn’t shown up yet. Not a single car (out of 2 dozen at the intersection) had an extinguisher. Thankfully a cook from a restaurant came out with an extinguisher and two of us forced open the hood to abate the flames.

once things settled I got back in my truck and stopped and bought an extinguisher and always keep one in my vehicles now.

and I feel a 5lb is the min.

 

Shit, you'd be better off pissing on it.....

Are there any concerns with keeping a fire ex in a hot vehicle? Our summers can reach 105 and unknown interior temps. Just want to safe and sure its ready if required. Thanks

I live in Arizona and kept my fire extinguishers inside my vehicle at all times and this was well over 10 years. I never had an issue except once when my dog found something to chew. I got him off just in time and it just spit

That article states that above 120 deg the fire extinguisher should be removed from the car/truck. I happen to know that in the south in the hot summer sun, interior temps can exceed 140 deg, maybe up to 150 or more in some cases. OK, that's hot. But....I'm pretty sure that a lot of people have fire extinguishers in their car, and I don't think I've EVER heard of one rupturing or exploding inside a hot car. Further, I'd be shocked if any reputable fire extinguisher manufacturer would sell one that had a problem at 120 deg and didn't get their pants sued off by someone that couldn't put out a fire from a ruptured extinguisher at 121 degree. IMHO.

I have mine in the back on a Quick Release... Figure I can get to it reasonably quick. I'm debating about putting another one up front though.

I thought about putting it on the upright of my racks but I take those off when I go to the car wash so I'd like to keep them as light as I can.

Homemade redneckgineering, but it tucks under the front seat better than the Desert Does It and Bracketeer set-ups…helluva lot cheaper too. Made another for my Maglite…

Do you know what the height of the Desert Does It mount is? I'm going to try and make my own molle panel to fit under the driver seat and was curious if a 2inch wide piece of aluminum would work or if it would need a 3inch piece. I have the Seat Jackers and will mount to them.

 

Thanks for that. If you’ve never faced an engine fire under the hood it’s way too hot to get that close with that little Element stick. You’d never be able to stand the radiant heat unless you were gloved up in a turnout jacket with a mask.
