My Expedition tows more?

I'm at a loss. I can't believe my 2018 Expedition Limited is rated at 9300lbs with greater payload.

We were looking at living in a TT for a few months after selling our house to find our "forever" home out of state. I haven't towed anything but explosives and that was in the Air Force in the 90's.

When I started researching my 17 Tundra towing capacity I looked into the Expedition for fun. Man, that seems weird to me.

 

The Expedition has F150 bones. I wouldn't be too overly shocked. It would be easy to load up the inside of an Expedition therefore taking away from payload

 

Its a 17 CM, 4x4. Comes in at 9k on the books with it's config. My Expedition comes in at 9300. I just had no idea. Oh well, it'll be nice insurance having two tow vehicles.

 

Toyota uses the ASE spec to determine tow rating and the big three don't. That can cause quite a gap in rating.

 

I could have sworn my 4x4 CM was at 9400 lbs but I could be misremembering.

 

SAE? Google says everyone but Nissan adopted in 2013 and Nissan joined in 2016.

My wife says it's okay if her truck has a bigger tow rating than mine. She says its only bigger by 300 pounds and i shouldnt worry about it. But now she always wants to tow our camper around while i ride bitch.

 

As long as you don't tow above 2,000 feet elevation that is.. Ford de rates that tow rating by 2% every 1,000 feet of elevation. Just sayin..

Not really surprised. On the one hand, you have the most underrated truck built by the most conservative automaker in the world. On the other hand, you have a truck-based full size SUV with their flagship half-ton drivetrain built by the most release-it-now-and-we’ll-sort-it-out-later automaker that is more focused on having the best numbers on paper.

Both people I know with gen 2 ecoboost Expys had to have the cam phaser warranty repair, and one of the trucks is making the same noise that led the dealer to doing the repair. Now the dealer says it’s normal, lol.

 

How is the SAE ratings determined? I remember when the 22 Tundra came out, in one of the interviews with Mike Swears, he made a point that the tow rating of the Tundra was quite conservative and that you can feel very confident while towing at the max ratings whereas with some of the competition, it will be a white knuckle ride at max rating. Did Toyota take the SAE rating and reduce it for their numbers or are they really not comparing the same thing? I have heard several first hand experiences with this as well where people who have max towed with the Tundra and with one of the domestics and the general consensus is that towing at max with the Tundra feels much safer and more secure than towing at max with one of the others.

 

I'm not sure if the Expedition is similar but my father in law's F150 has an excessively aggressive tow haul mode where it will downshift if he's going down a very slight incline and trying to pick up some speed to save fuel.

Very interesting link. I don't think there would be one simple reason the Tundra is rated where it is. I.E, the parking brake test. Especially if something as simple as the compound on the parking brake shoes being changed to add a couple of hundred more pounds weight.
Did the 2019 model year take a hit on towing capacity due to the omission of the transmission cooler?
