HELP. My dealer is charging me 1/2 hour time to turn off fake engine sound. Has anyone gotten it turned off for free? and what did you say to the dealer to get this annoying sound turned off for free?
    thanks for any help.

I used the Carista app to turn this off and it worked great. Just bought the one month subscription, made the changes, then cancelled it. Much easier then going through the dealer.

I should have done the same thing. Now I get to argue with a greedy dealer

Wait it won’t let you turn it off in the head unit? That sucks

Does the SR come with the non detuned SR5 sound piped in?

I'm looking at the Carista website, is it the same plug for the Gen2's? I didn't see gen 3 listed anywhere.

They only list the Gen 2 but it works fine for Gen 3.

No setting on head unit to turn it off. Only can be done in OBD2 with necessary software.
It's either a really dumb decision on Toyota side or an intentional revenue stream that is failing more than anything. Very irritating to buy a $70k modern truck only to have it intentionally make unnatural sounds.

Unfortunately, as most car manufacturers work to have their vehicles become more fuel efficient (or electric), they can lose the noises that customers expect to hear. And customers may think less of the vehicle's abilities as a result. I'm sure there are pickup truck customers that are oblivious to the fact that the sound is fake and instead think their truck sounds more "masculine" or "tougher" as a result. I would imagine that with Toyota going from a V8 to a V6 on the Tundra, they also wanted to make sure customers were still impressed with the power the Tundra had and this was one way to attempt that.

I am not a fan at all and personally enjoy having a quieter ride now that I disabled it via Carista. I'd rather listen to my music then a fake V8.

As someone who grew up with muscle car V8 engines, I thought the piped in noise was ridiculous.

I got the carista app and turn the V8 off. But then all I heard was the hybrid noises in the V6, and I definitely did not prefer that. To me it didn't seem that much quieter when driving under 45 mph. I ended up turning it back on.

Most of my passengers actually like the fake noise, and so I guess It's fine for me

@Woz 23. There you go, thinking like a marketing person. I'm sure there are an army of marketing people in Toyota thinking like....marketing people. So yes, I agree with your assessment. The critical mistake that I think Toyota made was to not make it a setting in the setup options for the owner. That way at least those of us who think it's a stupid idea can at least turn it off without going to the dealer and/or arguing with the dealer. IMHO

Agreed completely. Let me control it and decide when I want it.

    Also make it customizable:

If I'm in eco mode I most likely don't care about flooring it, so have it auto off.

If I climb my rpms at a high rate, like passing on the interstate starting at 70mph, adjust for that and turn it on and louder.

If I want a quiet ride, give me the option.

If I want to I press my passenger princess, give me the option to auto-on the noise with Sport mode.

I’ve owned 3 V8 Tundras and I never spent the thousand or so dollars to put an exhaust on just to make the engine sound better to my ears with pretty much no gain at all in performance. What’s the difference? The only time I thought my Tundra without the exhaust sounded bad ass was on cold start. I’m glad my Tundra sounds good inside the cabin. I know when I hit the gas that it’s still a bad ass under the hood and no one has ever been in my truck and said it sounds fake or cheesy. I remember when Ford had the Triton engine, my father test drove it and floored it, he told the salesman this is a noisey nothing and couldn’t get out of its own way. How many people lift their trucks to make them look like a machine off road, but yet never go off road. Toyota will gladly shut it off if it really bothers anyone so I don’t see why so many Tundra enthusiasts get so worked up by it, and again it’s not on every Tundra, only the JBL ones

I'm getting upset about it because I have to go to a dealer or buy Carista, and I ignorantly thought I could include turning it off by the dealer as part of another reason to be there. Then they hit me with a 1/2 labor charge to do it after it's done. Well I have news for them (probably tomorrow) I'll hit them back by sending my wife in to dispute the labor charge. They'll wish they didn't charge me in the first place LOL.

Well well, talked to my dealer "Customer Relations Manager". He basically laughed at the idea that I was charged to turn off the fake engine sound. He is pulling that charge off my account and apologized for the service tech guy making that a charge. He went on to say that yes, it's an "official" Toyota policy to turn it off/on as the customer wishes. I doubt that means back and forth, so if I want it back on I'll have to go through Carista. But in the end the person in-the-know in Toyota was a nice guy and understands how dumb this can turn...literally and figuratively.

I drove with the fake noise for one day and turned it off the next. I don't actually notice a huge difference. I do have a TRD air filter though. Or maybe I didn't actually turn it off. I know the other changes through Carista worked though.

Got the truck back with fake engine sound turned off. What a relief. Both wife and I are super glad it's off. The real engine sound is just fine for us. Actually I think it sounds great, a bit "throaty" but not in your face if that makes sense. And I can hear the turbos sometimes too, that's more cool to me that a roar of a fake V8 :)

Would that mean that an SR5 with JBL doesn't have the fake engine noise, or that a limited without JBL doesn't have the noise?

Yes Toyota considers fake engine sound an upgrade. At least it doesn’t have auto start/stop that has to be turned off every time you get in the truck.

Did I read somewhere that there will be a software update coming in April? (don't remember where I read that or maybe it's just wishful thinking). Maybe, just maybe, the ability to turn on/off the fake engine sound will be an owner adjustment then :monocle:

I get the annoyance at not being able to turn it off via the infotainment, but Carista really isn't that expensive. I recently bought one and found it really useful. I was able to get rid of the seatbelt chime at all five seating locations, alter the turn signal duration and various other little things. First month of the Carista trial is free so you are only out the price of the OBD2 box once you make your changes and cancel the free trial membership. Personally I left my engine noise on, but I may change that this weekend to see how it sounds/feels.
