Spark plug change, how difficult?

I read the plugs need to be changed frequently on the new tundra. Any idea how complicated it is for this model?

 

What interval does the owners manual/service schedule call for?

 

Just flipping through the online manual. Going off of memory (which really shouldn’t be trusted at my age) I recall something low like 40k??

Correcting myself…… manual calls for replacement @80k or 8 years.

still curious how “complicated” it is on this truck. Plugs and brakes are the few things I’m comfortable doing.

 

I doubt anyone has 80K yet on a truck that was introduced last year. You’ll probably have to wait some time for an answer.

Yes. But not in regards to performing mx that won’t be due for at least 5 yrs. By the time I have to change them, there will be multiple utube videos out to show the way.

 

As per 2022 Tundra maintenance service schedule, spark plugs are to be replaced at 40k miles.

That's the only one "complicated" item that's being covered by the prepaid maintenance. Although we don't know yet how much it is to replace the spark plugs in the new Tundra. Could be simple, or a major PITA as it was in my hemi

 

Looking at a schematic shows a lot of stuff potentially blocking access to the coils and spark plugs.

My guess is the average DIY owner is better off paying to have the spark plugs changed.

 

Need to have a look at this myself. I have always and forever DIY'ed my plugs including on some vehicles that would make you cry it was so difficult. But then I got spoiled with my Tacoma on 30k change interval that was about a 45 minute job taking my time. Hoping this one isn't too much worse, but we'll see.

 

if they are the iridium tipped ones, they lowered the mileage from the old days, use to be like 90-100k. but from what i remember i was told dont replace them unless you start feeling issues during acceleration, pings, etc.

havent had any issues on my 2014 4runner at 92k. but then again only thing i have serviced on my 2014 is my 3 diffs and coolant. still on my oem brake fluid and brakes but looking to look to replace those this year since they pushed the 6th gen out to 2025.

 

The Iridium's on my 07 were to be changed out at 130K.....

 

They are lying to you.

- They lied about oil change intervals: 10K way too much.

- They lied about the transmission heater also functioning as a cooler.

- They lied about ATF replacement intervals: 60K way too much. Also, any temperature excursion above 130°F requires immediate replacement.

Here's what Teeyota isn't telling you and it's unbelievable: spark plugs should be replaced along with the engine oil... first 100 miles to get rid of all that break-in metal so it doesn't clog the bearings and electrode gaps, 500 miles because oil and spark plugs are cheap... engines aren't, 1000 miles because big oil/iridium conglomo bastards trying to control us, and every 5000 moving forward because Teeyota only cares until the warranty expires.

 

Why haven't you looked at your engine? Such a passive aggressive question.

 

Toyota doesn't use break in oil. There is not, and never has been a requirement or recommendation to change plugs after 100miles ever, maybe 100k. Strictly for your understanding, not even Bugatti's replace plugs or oil at 100mile, 500mile.

I was going to post in this thread last night but it was going to be a negative post towards the OP so I walked away. Maybe there’s still hope here.

 

So we need change plugs before we change oil. Are we back in 1970's again.

Doesn't look too bad as far as I can tell without looking under to compare to the diagram. But what the heck are "small head bolts"?

 

To answer the OP question, All Data shows labor time at 2.2 hours for spark plug remove and replace. Procedure shows removal of the eninge cover, disconnect engine wire and misc evap hoses and brackets, then you'll have access to the ignition coils to unbolt and remove those before finally removing the plugs. Reverse steps to put it all back together. Realistically an experienced wrencher could do it in about an hour and one beer =)

 

In my book that is an easy job and sounds similar to the Tacoma. If anyone ever had a 90s era Z28 with the LT1 small block, that was a full day job. IIRC the book said 8 hours and it took me longer than that, mainly because you had to drop the y-pipe for the rear and figure out some Houdini maneuver to get #2 (passenger side front). That plug alone took me like 4 hours mostly cursing and trying all the tricks, although someone with smaller hands might have done better.

This right here. Generally, any Plug change is a PIA especially with removing top covers and other items in the way. Personally, have not looked to hard at this yet. From experience with the several 4Runners owned, not difficult but a PIA.

 

I'll bite. What's your basis? Any facts to back up? You laid it out there so perhaps you could provide valuable factual insight?
