Oil Change or not?

I need some opinions. My 21 TRD Pro had 12,400 miles on it when I bought it in December 2021. The dealer changed the oil and filter with 0W-20 Mobil One right before I bought it. Now it’s a little over a year later and I have 15,700 miles on it. I put 3,300 miles on it in a year. At this rate, it will be April or May before I get to the recommended 17,400 oil change mileage. I plan on using a local Toyota dealership that I’ve always had good luck with. I know it’s not relevant, but the oil on the dip stick still looks brand new.

Question, do I change the oil immediately or can I wait until I get closer to the mileage?

I’d change it.

 

Oil is cheap. Engines aren't. When in doubt, change the oil.

 

The oil is synthetic; it does not spoil in a year. I’d wait till at least 5K.

 

5k or every 6 months if you want it to last. Short trips end up with oil accumulating water and gasoline.

 

If it was me, I would change it.

 

Change it. I do every 5000 or six months, but I tow a trailer. Like some said, oil is cheap but engines aren’t. Do the oil change yourself save money.

 

Change it and let the dealer do it. If you decide to get rid of the truck it will look good on the car fax.

Oil Changes: 5,000 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first)
Transmission Fluid: 60,000 miles or 6 years (Drain and Fill NOT Flush) Toyota ATF WS
Coolant: 50,000 miles or 5 years (OE Pink 50/50 Super Long Life)
Differential and Transfer Case: 30,000 miles ***Especially the first 30,000***
Brake Fluid: Every 3 to 5 years
Power Steering Fluid: Every 50-70,000 miles (do not use Transmission Fluid)
Spark Plugs: Every 120,000 miles *** use OE plugs ***

 

Depends a lot on driving conditions. 60k miles of highway in northern Maine - sounds about right. 60k in Houston traffic jerking - over the roof.

ATF supplies friction modifiers that coat clutch packs. Modifiers wear out naturally with every clutch pack engagement/disengagement. When ATF runs out of modifiers, the wear is accelerated drastically. Clutch pack wear by-products kill valve body.

Every 2 years, especially in humid climate.

Thanks for the inputs! I’ve scheduled an appointment for the normal 15k service plus oil/filter change. I used to be more religious about vehicle maintenance. Before I retired a couple of years ago, I was commuting and always met the mileage goals before the time expired. I learned to take care of your machinery at an early age from my dad. He was a U.S. Navy retired Chief Engineman who worked on everything from small engines to marine diesels that you could walk into.

 

If you have documentation that the dealer changed the oil. Why change it so early? Sound like a waste.
Second thought. As someone posted above. Have the dealer change the oil again. Will show up on the history report.

 

Yep. I also want to have my local dealer go through and verify that all recalls are up to date.
