Guess I won't own a Tundra...

So I expanded my search area to see if I could find a Tundra to buy. I've given up on finding a TRD Pro (posted on this earlier) and decided I'd just look for a Limited. Low and behold, there sits one on a lot in somewhere FL, listed at MSRP - $67,400.
I call em up. They're happy and friendly. A+ rated family business. We talk, and I tell em to send me the 'make me drive down and buy it cost.'
I'm looking at the proposal now. For a Tundra Limited (not the TRD, not the Capstone) they sent me a final price of $89.765.
$22,365 MORE than the price listed on Autotrader. Let me repeat that - TWENTY TWO THOUSAND MORE than the listed get-me-to-waste-time-calling price.
I swear, I'm done with Toyota. I can't find a single dealer - even those recommended to me by friends and family are jacking it up - to buy from. This exchange listed above has now happened four times, each with different dealers, each ending with them tacking on $10-20K more.
I'm not doing it. I refuse.
Shifting to look at other brands now.
    <sigh>

That's a dealer problem, not a brand problem. Dealerships are not owned by Toyota.

@Squatting Pigeon @RobertD another soul needs saving here.

I'm not knocking Toyota. I obviously wanted - still want - to buy a Tundra so I like what they make. But it doesn't matter if I still have to go through a dealer tacking on cost just for the sake of doing it.

In the past 10 minutes I found a Chevy ZR2 loaded for under 72. Just sayin.

I know of 3 dealerships in Richmond that do not sell over MSRP, but its a littl of a haul for you.

To give you perspective, I drove 1200ish miles to get the exact TRD Pro Tacoma I wanted with no markup, and only the accessories I wanted. I happened to have family within a few hours of the dealership to help justify the trip, but I would do it again to save the $5k-$15k that closer joints wanted to upcharge. If you don't have to trade, a plane ticket is a great way to get the rig you want and have a nice drive to break it in.

McGeorge, Mechanicsville, and Haley. I think Mechanicsville adds on a protection package for like $1500. Worth a try if you are that interested.

Also, I’m about to buy from my local dealer. They have ~$2k in dealer adds, which I was okay with. Otherwise at msrp. I’m in FL panhandle and if you want my sales reps name, shoot me a pm. You may be waiting on an allocation though is all

    LOL.

The current Silverado has a pretty decent track record overall, and the ZR2 is actually very off road capable which can’t be said for the TRD Pro.

I like Toyota and wanted to like the 3rd Gen Tundra but it’s overpriced, under performing in comparison tests, and Toyota’s manufacturing and distribution model of allocation vs ordering at the price point a Tundra sells for sucks.

I bought in Macon GA from Butler Toyota in October. They have had a few units in stock some advertised under list. They get a little handsy in your wallet with accessories and fees but not too bad. Go to their website if have something call Troy in sales. He is a pro.

OP, are you on a waitlist with a dealership? If not yet, then I suggest you get on one or a few that will allow you to get your moneyback as needed.

This is what happened to me....I was waiting to get allocation and someone backed out of a deal. So I got the truck that is close to what I wanted months before the scheduled delivery. The thing is the approach I described only works if you are able to wait.

If you must buy now and you want a 3rd gen tundra, you might need to buy used. There are so many used vehicles that are constantly dropping in price every week.

^ What he said. If you haven't already you should join this group. There are a lot being posted for under MSRP (non-pro's). The broker @maxdriver is referring to is in that group and has some great deals.

Real prices are discussed in person.. I found a lot of fluff discussing pricing online and on phone.

If the truck is not on the lot, I’m not coming in.

Sorry for your troubles, OP. But if you find the vehicle on auto trader, go to the dealer's website. Verify your MSRP listed price on (this is important) *THEIR WEBSITE*. Check for fine print about market adjustments. If after this, if they roll a barrel out for you to bend over when you're ready to sign with these "hidden fees" then thats a bait and switch and what they are doing is illegal in all 50 states.

What is likely actually happening, is they are listing their vehicles everywhere to extend their buyer market, listing at MSRP, then on their own website are being upfront about market adjustments etc. before you even get to the door. Just because they can. Supply. Demand. It's all very easy.
Plenty of folks (not just on this forum) used to be pretty proud of themselves with how far under MSRP they could *work their deal* and show those salesman who was boss time and time again when they used to buy vehicles pre-pandemic. Not so many of those threads anymore. Sucks to suck. :notsure: But again: Supply. Demand.

I placed 3 deposits to get the truck I wanted. I wouldn’t give up.
I’m not posting “Guess I won’t own a GR Corolla or IS500” cuz I’ve placed deposits on both of them.

Yeah it sucks, but instead of being so mad at the dealers, be mad at the mouth breathers enabling the dealers by paying that much. that dealer wouldn’t be asking that much if they didn’t think somebody was going to pay it.

as for other brands, I think ram and GM are doing discounts now but I think Ford is still having inventory issues and so I don’t believe they are and you may run into a similar situation with them
