Mama wants a new ride. Good news for me, I get the 4Runner!

But here is what is rolling around ion my head, so asking for y'alls input to decide...

Dealers want to give me 3k for for my 03 AC. I understand they need to make money on trades. So if I sell private party, this is what Im looking to get... Minimum 6K. Im going to post it for 7K and see what happens. As gearheads/ enthusiasts, would you think this is a fair asking price?

The vehicle:
3rd owner. Bought it in Arizona in 2007 with 42K on it. Spent 11 years in Virginia and 5 in Oklahoma.
2003 Access Cab 2wd SR5 (built 12/02) with 220K miles.

The good:
Mechanically immaculate. Oil changed every 5k with Toyota filter and full synthetic oil.
Tranny fluid done every 15K with Toyota Type-IV AFT.
Rear diff done every 30K with synthetic 75-90W.
Timing belt, outer drive belt. water pump, cam and crank seals done 60K ago.
Valve cover gaskets (seeping a little not leaking/ making a mess) and plugs done 10k ago.
Not a leak anywhere ( oil, tranny, diff, P/S or coolant)
All 4 shocks and rear full rear brake job last spring (maybe 8k ago)
New tires put on in December
AC will freeze you out in the Oklahoma heat
Everyone loves the crotch vent below the steering wheel!!!
No rips in the interior, seats are not work out, minor wear/ stains on the carpet
NO RUST on body or frame other than light surface corrosion in some of the paint scratches (very minor)
Up to date on all recalls/ warranty work.
Never been in a major accident. Did have a few fender benders/ parking lot dings which resulted in the rear bumper, front bumper skin and a fender replaced and some trim pieces. No airbags deployed or anything major.

The BAD:
Its a 20 year old vehicle
Typical Toyota paint. Hood and roof look like hell. But no rust!
She has a CEL. Its a O2 Sensor Heater. Ive had this code since 2015. Im not replacing an O2 sensor for the portion that only works for 5 or so minutes upon start up. Sensor portion is fine and regulates like it should. I scan it every oil change to make sure it hasnt died. So far so good!

So do yall think Im crazy for asking 7K?
No, I dont "need" to sell it but I wont have a use for it?

I’m surprised the dealer would give you $3k for a hood and roof that need repaint. My gut says you won’t get more than $5k, but who knows?

It wouldn’t sell in my neck of the woods without 4wd due to the snow.

 

Your pricing seems fine. I'd probably just throw an O2 sensor in it just to get rid of the light, even though you know it's not a big problem other people will look at is as neglect.

 

I'd pay that, if the light was out. The problem with CELs is that you never know if its REALLY just the sensor, or something much more expensive and a PITA so I'm highly skeptical about those as I've been burned before.

Let's be realistic: If the roof doesn't look like the hood, and you paid a shop $500-600 to re-paint the hood, you could for sure get $7k depending on your local market.

O2 sensor heater doesn't necessarily mean O2 sensor fail, it could be other issues. But again, if you bought the correct DENSO replacement and swapped, you could potentially eek out twice or thrice what you pay for the DENSO sensor. I personally always like to replace upstream/downstream at the same time, though.

Dealership will always offer 2x-3x less than what they think they'll net at auction on something. They probably think it'll pull $6k at auction, and are offering you $3k. Likewise, private quick sale is probably around $6k, assuming frame is clean.

 

Agree and understand. CEL is always one of the first things I look for in a used car. Thats the reason I scan it every oil change just to make sure. I did pull the sensor a couple years back just to make sure I could get it off. Reinstalled and anti seazed the studs. Does that stuff go bad after a decade

 

Hood is really the worst of it. Bad part is, that is the first part you see Roof is more oxidized than anything. Lost its clear coat many moons ago.

Old man tan, 2wd, needs paint work, and is throwing a code? I would just put it up for 5k firm and turn it quick, screw doing any work to it. You should be hitting the market at the right time for tax return money.

ETA: Real sanity check should be ditching a Tundra for a 4runner

Aw, man, I just saw it’s 2wd. Worth more than 3k. I like the advice above, list at 5,500 then take 5k.

Same, that cuts the value significantly.

 

8 years in open loop mean your cats are full of gunk and your knock sensor was disabled. These are expensive problems.

 

I think your right on track for the $$$ ,trucks always hold there value

 

How much of a hurry is Mama ?
Meaning, have you got a month to either dicker with another dealer for say $3500.

Last timing belt was @ 160K, possible 3 years before new needed. From birth to 160K was a timing belt put on ?

I'd definetly have to personally see the frame since it was on the East coast a certain numbers of years.
If what I see and IF what you say maintenance wise is kosher and IF you were in my neck of the woods, we'd be dickering around $4500.
I'd want to know what that carpet stain came from driver side passenger door at door opening bottom area.....spillage, water leak ?

What my thoughts are on what I'd have to dish out in my neck of the woods....

• All O2 sensors if no code indication/readings point to Cat replacement $500
• Roof $500
  
• Hood $500
• Bumper $500 plus cost of new bumper....unless you throw in the below hood ornament

 

Pffff, we don't need no stinking hood clear coat.

 

So funny thing...
Dealer called and offered 5k. Which was my bottom dollar. So..... Yeah. Its now sold as is! Got to love the end of the month panic!!!
