Been changing oil every 10k. Did this affect my car?

Hey all,

After switching from going to the Dealership to a new mechanic, the mechanic recommended starting changing the oil change every 5K instead of 10K. I have been doing every 10K for 55,000 miles now. Do you guys think this affected my car in a bad way for doing it until 55,000 miles now?

• Do you guys agree on changing it every 5K?
• Also wondering which oil brand you guys recommend

Depends on your usage, I've been changing mine at 10k and getting oil analysis. As for oil, any full synthetic oil would do, if you changing it every 5k, it doesn't matter the brand, as long as it's clean oil. Manual calls for 0W20, some swear by 5W30, I'm going to try out 5W30 when it's spring time here.

My oil is pretty black by 5000 miles.

 

I'd definitely change it every 5 to 6K.

Funny story: I got 4 free oil changes when I got my truck in 2020. The first 4 they spaced out every 10K; I actually paid a bit extra to get it done more often.

Once the last free one was done, I checked the 'next oil change' sticker they put in my truck.

I flat asked the service department "Why is it I could NOT get y'all to change it before every 10K miles for the free ones...but now that I have to pay for them, they'll be every 5-6K?"

Lots of whistling and looking around. LOL

 

Interesting thought everyone was going to recommend 0W-20. How long have you been using using 0W-20 for?

 

Why do you use 5W-30? So far I've been hearing everyone recommend 0W-20.

 

Oh wow. Would you say you drive a lot compared to the average driver? I basically drove 50,000 miles in 2 years.

 

LOL that's why I no longer want to support the Dealerships haha. Even the maintenance guide from the Tundra manual says to replace every 10K miles...that's why I thought I was doing it right.

 

I live in the desert southwest so I don’t need the 0 weight cold protection. The valve train is soooooo much quieter / smoother on 5w-30.

 

Okay, I'll be the devil's advocate. 5000 miles is overkill, but it's your dime, so do as you please. And by the way, color has nothing to do with lubricity.

I do 5k and the OEM filter using the cheapest full synthetic I can get. Sometimes it’s M1, sometimes it’s Warren. Once I’m out of warranty I’ll probably run it a bit longer, like 7-8k. 0w20 in the winter and 0w30 the rest of the year.

 

I do it every 5k. Will stretch a little longer if all highway in a short time.

The truck cost $43k, sticker is $48k

Filter cartridges in bulk are $3-4 ea. Oil, even name brand synthetic, is ~$20/5qts if you shop around. Sometimes you get a roll of shop towels with that. Kirkland is even less. Total oil change cost is about 1/2 of a gas tank fill.

Car care nut recommends 5k or 6 months because of the piston rings.

The manual says 10k but if you read more in depth, unless you do all highway miles with no stop and go or short trips, 90% of people qualify for 5k oil changes. 10k oil changes are a marketing gimmick to make cars seem cheaper to upkeep. The vast majority of people do not qualify for this. Generally speaking the less mileage you drive, the more likely you need to change oil every 6 months rather than by mileage alone.

Plus, I look forward to my oil changes and giving the truck a good once over and making sure everything is perfect and torqued since I offroad as well.

 

Almost 4 years using 0W20. First oil change I did at 8k intervals and after 2 changes, analysis came back good and was recommended to try 10K. Next one was changed at 10K and oil analysis still looked good. The manual also states if you drive under the special circumstances or driving conditions to change oil at 5k. And I agree, oil color is not a good indication of lubricity.

 

Costco has their oil on sale for the next week or so ($8 off). It's only $1 more shipped than in the store (not going to the store is worth more than $1 to me and it's only about 5 mins away).

 

I use 5w-30, so much quiter and better oil pressure, F&$K the EPA. As for 5-10k, I stick to 5k. Oil is cheap, a 5.7 isn't. I have heard, haven't looked into it, that oil analysis form like Blackstone doesn't really tell 100% of the story. I have heard, haven't look into it, that a full oil analysis is more in depth and more $$$. I know that Toyota had put some cheap oil rings and the high mile oil changes was causing havoc on those engines. I don't know if the 5.7 had those types of oil ring or not but like I said, oil is cheap. Plenty of car nuts will also tell you 5k.

Do you mean piston rings? Never heard of an oil ring.

Oil (5W30) and filter change every 5 - 6k miles. To echo what pursuit 2550 posted earlier, oil changes are cheap; a replacement engine is not. Shorter interval oil changes are cheap insurance, IMO.

 

I run 5w30, 10k changes. Currently at 251k with plenty of great UOAs. I tow and off road as well. These engines are incredibly easy on oil.

 

Follow what the specs are on the vehicle.

 

Yes and no. Can the blackest of black oil be 100% functional? Yes. Can the blackest of black oil have all it's additives degraded and no longer be providing high level of lubricity. Yes.

 

Damage, not likely unless you were driving in dusty conditions. I've always changed at 5,000k with my current truck and my older 08. Have always used 0w20, plenty of rv towing and zero oil useage with either truck.
