So I’m torn between a powertrax rear locker or a e-locker. As I understand it the powertrax is a mechanical gear locker so no clutch packs or anything.

also.. any good installers in Pensacola fl ?

Primary pavement or off road? Any supercharger or planning on one? Why 5.29's?

Seems like I heard about a good installer in Alabama (pretty close). Will look and see if I can find him again.

Did he not suggest powertrax as well? Pretty sure it's the best choice in your use case. I looked through my files a bit and can't seem to find the shop I'm thinking of. Will keep looking and get back if I can find it.

No problem brother, I haven’t read and seen his recommendation on powertrax or e locker. If he says powertraxs say no more .

You should do them at the same time. Whichever choice you make.
eLocker is locking both wheels at the same time and you have to activate it. For mechanical the power is transfered to the non-spinning wheel when a wheel slips and automatically does so.

If you plan on offroading at all the elocker will serve you better but you can make due with a mechanical locker.

If you aren't towing, hauling, racing, or crawling off road, you might want to leave it alone and spend the same on something that will be more beneficial for you. Also sort of depends on your future plans for the truck. Lots to think about.

The powertrax is just the bees knees for every day driving and moderate off-roading. It is always at play putting a lot of traction down without you having to think about it or activate it. It’s always ready and works great. Definitely recommend! No substitute for a locker for serious offroad though. Could always do a Powertrax in the rear and a locker in the front.

What made you decide on the Powertrax vs standard LSD like an Auburn? I heard the PowerTrax had a lot of durability issues when they first came out… This was all hear say though.

Just make sure to test fit your axles into the new carrier first thing. Don’t wait til you’ve set up the gears as reassembled everything. I’ve had issues with auburn and PowerTrax and stock axles not sliding on within the past year.

Keith - what would be your go to? PowerTrax or Auburn? You obviously have experience with both.

I’ll be paying a shop for this, it’s beyond my mechanical capabilities as I’ve never messed with gears. But thanks for the information.

In contrast and if I am not mistaken the GripPro uses Torsen gears instead of a clutch to lock the spinning wheel. Folks have reported a little more longevity out of the Toren style LSDs. I'm sure there are other factors that may favor the Auburn.

They’re going to be a very pissed off shop if you’re one of the unlucky ones with axles which don’t slip in. You’d want to warn them of this problem and have them test for your axles ahead of assembling the entire diff.

One thing I’ve learned over the years when it comes to gears is let the shop doing the work for you, order what they recommend and are familiar with. Saves a lot of hassle.

This right here. I had Zuk setup my Powertrax rear last summer and it's awesome both onroad and off. Eaton E-Locker waiting in the garage for his availability next month.

On the tight axle issue, definitely check it before you set the diff up. Mine was snug, but would start on both axles before I had the 3rd setup. While installing, the driver side started fine and took a little deadblow action to seat enough for the hub bolts to pull it home. No issues in 2,500 miles and two trips to Baja.
