Differential fluid type

I'm planning on changeing differential fluid my self on a 2000 Tundra rwd, but not sure what type does it take? I will buy AMSoil fluid.

 

You can look up owners manuals on the Toyota website. It’ll tell you what you need to know. I think it’s like

$39 75W-90 GL-5 Limited Slip, Ultra Long Drain 500k Miles, Manual Transmission, Gear/Differential Lubricant (1 Gallon)

75W-90 if you don’t have a limited slip rear end. Don’t quote me on it though.

I emailed AMSOIL and they stated

Their website should say the same. I know, I had to check recently

My reco is, when in question, consult the website of the gear oil you prefer. They'll all tell you what you can (or should) use.

Thanks for referring that. I had the same issue of the amsoil site listing three options, I emailed them for clarification. I did see ECGS recommendation on here as well based on their experience.

 

I did a fluid change on the rear LSD diff a couple months back with

Motul 100122 90 PA Transmission Gear Box Fluid Lubricant Oil Limited Slip Differential Mineral Car Motorcycle 2 Liter

MOTUL -318121 90 PA Extreme Pressure Limited-Slip Differential (LSD) oil and it has improved the limited slip action on my old worn out LSD with 290K miles on clock.

 

I ended up changing my order. I'm 4WD w/LSD and I'd picked up full synthetic Mobil 1 based on ECGS's input. But ordered 75w-140. Our resident Toyo mech recommended switching up to

$39 75w-90 GL-5 Limited Slip, Ultra Long Drain 500k Miles, Manual Transmission, Gear/Differential Lubricant (1 Gallon)

75w-90, so that's what I got. I'm guessing with 2WD, LSD or not, you'd aim for the same.

I only went w/Mobil 1 because it's a trusted brand for me (my preferred oil), comes with LS additive package, ECGS regarded it very highly, I could get it locally, 75w-90 is only $17/qt, and I had a 25% off coupon for Advance Auto Parts, which knocked my per-bottle price down to under $15/qt. Coupon is 755Z1 if you don't want to fork out $25-$35/quart.

 

I went AMSOIL

75w-90. I too prefer Mobil 1 oils, almost all oil changes, and have run their 75W-90 in a chevrolet rear equipped with and LSD. No issues for 240kish miles. Thanks for the code as well

 

I was two shakes away from ordering Amsoil also, based on a plethora of reco's on here. My uncle in Vegas raced cars up until he passed a couple years back and was a die-hard Amsoil guy. Amsoil vs. Lucas was a political topic in his circles. If Mobil 1 is good enough for F1 racing engines, it's good enough for mine.

 

I've used Mobil 1 in all the diffs (front and rear) on all my cars. When I changed my Tundra (from who knows to Mobil 1 75/90 LS) the diff began to complain almost at once. For some reason (anecdotally, at least according to this board) our Tundra LSD diffs don't like synthetic (my Land Cruiser and 4Runner don't seem to care). I switched to Lucas 80w-90, and now the Tundra is happy too.

 

That's weird to me, because Amsoil Severe Gear is absolutely synthetic. Nobody ever complains about it causing chatter etc.

Mobil 1 used to make a "non-LS" version of their

75w-90. And it had the exact same part number as the current LS, but the bottle lacked "LS" on the front to designate it was GL-5 with the LS additive package. How long ago did you give Mobil 1 a shot?

At worst, I guess I'm out $90. I may end up still using the 75w-140 in the rear, and 75w-90 in the front and TC. Since I'm stuck receiving 7 bottles of each either way.

 

I also had issues with the mobil, got severe chattering when accelerating from a stop. Added extra LSD additive which worked for about 5k miles on the first bottle, and the second time about 3k if I remember correctly.

After switching to amsoil I'm going on 18k miles. My use case is towing my camper close to 50% of the miles I drive the truck. YMMV
