My 2020 makes a loud exhaust whining/squealing sound right upon cold startup when below 0oC outside, but it seems more prevalent the colder it is. It lasts about 20seconds and as the sound lessens the exhaust gas becomes thick and white.

Has anyone experienced this and what is the cause of the whining noise???

I have a video for ref but not sure the best way to go about sharing that type of file….

Hard to say without a video. Could just be the normal operation of the secondary air injection pump on cold start? Are you hearing it in the engine bay/front of the truck?

I’ll pop the hood tomorrow on startup and take a video to try zeroing in on the source of the sound. What’s the best way to share a short video file on the forum?

Not your exhaust. It’s the motor. Normal operational noises in cold temps.

Is it truly white smoke or exhaust fog from the temp differential?

I must be out to lunch w the initial thinking that the sound is coming from the exhaust as I can’t think of what could even cause this sound. The exhaust gas does visibly change from more or less clear while the whining is going to thick & white once the sound goes away. I’ll investigate better tomorrow and see what I find. If I can share a vid, you’ll see as it’s quite noticeable.

As for the sound being normal, I’ve never had a vehicle make anything as ill sounding as this whine, even when I’ve been in -45oC ambient…

I'm betting it has something to do with with the saip when the valves close, noise stops, exhaust changes
    Definitely not normal

Here’s the video I took this morning. Ambient temp roughly -30oC so nothing too crazy. Notice the change in exhaust gas appearance starting around the 20sec mark, as the whining starts to quiet and then stops

Power steering pump. Turn the wheel and listen! Will make you cringe. Mine does it any time it is freezing or below and has since new. I keep wanting to change it but only remember in the winter.........

Sounds like pulleys or power steering from the cold weather. The steam in exhaust seems normal to me. My 2020 made crazy sounds below 20 degrees mainly creaking of interior panels.

I’ve been trying to find my whining noise for 2 years now. Flushed my power steering, changed my pulleys until I read a thread talking about the alternator. The noise was so loud I couldn't determine if it was the power steering pump or alternator. Decided to replace my alternator today, whining noise is gone. Now I hear a ticking sound, should have left it whining.

My truck was doing it all the time, pretty lucky that the alternator never gave out.

I live upstate NY, very cold, my 2020 has never done that. I have started that truck in -15 last year and it hesitated but started, no whining. I would get that checked out.

It's going into the dr next week although temps are warmer now so they will have to rely on my video as they won't be able to replicate the sound.... This sound is a far cray from a squeaky serpentine belt.

Dealer disregarded this as a normal power steering sound…Without throwin I’ve been around power steering's that squeal in cold temps and actually had a mishap in the backcountry where a pump went dry and that sound is unforgettable. This is a different sound and I’m not convinced it’s the power steering pump. Next cold snap, I’ll turn the wheel back and forth to video that it doesn’t affect the sound. Thanks for the comment @Leo's first as this seems to make the most sense based on symptoms. Also found this video online with a similar sound.

After more back-forth with the dealer over the course of a couple appointments and eventually elevating to the service manager who consulted with the shop foreman, they're fully entrenched in the power steering pump theory especially without the SAIP throwing a code. I'm hoping for some cold weather and will start the truck w/o the serpentine belt to disprove their theory.

I feel it's more likely that in cold weather, the SAIP valve is slow to open (sticky) and causes the pump to squeal like a banshee for about 30sec without throwing a code. I've also asked the dealer to figure out if it's possible to start the truck with the SAIP valve forced closed to disprove that as a possibility. Does anyone on the forum know if this is possible and how to keep the valve closed during startup? My warranty is up in Oct and would like to get this sorted out sooner rather than later.

Crazy. My truck lived outside it’s whole life until this winter. I never heard that much ruckus even at -20f. It does sound like a power steering groan, but as has been suggested above - that’s usually pretty easy to assess by simply turning the wheels and listening fro the groan to change pitch. Though, listening to the clip of the SAIP failure above, it does sound suspicious..

As to the forced SAIP closure, I would think that they could command it with techstream. I know they can manual cycle the cam chain tensioner with the dealership software/scan tool, so why not the SAIP?

Been back-forth with the dealer on this and if I can't get it into the shop when it's cold enough, before my warranty is up at the end of the month I'll be owning this problem down the road.

Alberta here as well, all our vehicles make awful noises below -30, tundra as well. Grey smoke, squeeling, groaning, angry hvac fans… i just start it from inside the house and live in ignorance.
