I have to admit that the Toyota's 10 speed transmission is smooth overall. But I noticed, when switching to sequential shifting at highway speed (70-75), it shows that it's on the 8th gear. I can up shift to 9 and 10 manually with no issue. My other vehicles that I have with sequential shifting automatically will show whatever gear it is on rather it be slow on lower gears of highway speeds. It would be nice if the gear indicator was present on the gauge cluster at all times regardless. Any insight would be appreciated on how Toyotas 10 speed transmission functions.

The sequential shift is a range select function. When it shows S8, it will shift normally up to 8th gear and not shift to 9th or 10th. When you select S10, it’s the same as being in D. It doesn’t mean it goes to 10th gear. It’s not really helpful to know the gear in my opinion but would be nice to have the option for sure.
