Interesting….actually surprised that the Tacoma is not first or second with no mention of the 4 Runner in the SUV category??

I wonder if 4runner didn't make the list because they get pulled off the road for exclusive off roading?

Looking further in the article shows the 4Runner at number 8 in the SUV category.

Interesting that Sequoia owners can expect a further 50k beyond the Tundra, despite the fact that it is a derivative of the latter. I know that they often start life as runabouts for soccer moms but the older they get the more likely that they get the same kind of beating that an older truck gets.

Those Tundra numbers make me depressed, mine will hit 241k before this weekend is out and their number before Easter, I'm sure I'll cruise past it but I'm under no illusions of achieving a superbly high mileage because she had the hallmarks of having been used as a construction site vehicle before I bought her and I've made her work her ass off. Not helped by the fact that I often blow through my own set maintenance targets - last week's oil and filter change at 23k interval was far longer than intended but you would not believe the number of customers we had that insisted on closing right before Christmas, who in their right mind closes three days before Christmas...

Problem with these charts is they adjust for life of vehicle. Sure the Tundra outlasts the Big 3 but what it doesn't show is although the Ford or Ram lasted over 200K they also needed three water pumps, four starters, 6 alternators, 635 window regulators, along with multiple other items.

    A few thoughts on this.

    • First, their methodology: their numbers are based on the mileage that the top 1% of cars within each model obtained. The top 1% of lots of these models are probably outliers, i.e., not the norm. I wonder how quickly these numbers would drop for all of the models if we looked at the top 5%, 10%, 25%…
    • Look at the Chevy Impala. The only reason it’s on that list is because it is one of the most common rental cars in the US. They pile on lots of miles quickly, and who knows how many repairs it takes to keep them in the fleet.
    • In fact, no data is given on any model regarding how many repairs are required to keep it going.
    • Families who need full size SUVs tend to keep them for a long time.
    • I think people don’t keep 4Runners as long because they grow out of them. They’re great until you have a third kid. We did it with 3 for a while. Not fun.

I read some other article (EDIT: link) about the longest lasting vehicles on the road, and while the 4Runner wasn’t the highest for 200k+ mile vehicles (those were all full size if I remember correctly), it had the highest % of 300k+ mile specimens still on the road.
