I know it’s been talked about but there are diff opinions on what this is.

I put in the TRD filters in my 2022 Toyota Tundra. I noticed the charcoal looking filters on the bottom of the air boxes. Some have said this is for noise control. Some have removed these trying to get more air flow.
The more I look at these and I started thinking.
I think these may be there for the PCV system.
If anyone is familiar with oil catch cans that can be put on to catch the oil mist that comes from crank case pressure into the PCV system.
The catch cans keep the oil vapors/Mist from re/entering through the air filters and into the engine eventually causing buildup up onto the intake valves…
I’m thinking these charcoal filters maybe in the air boxes to catch this oil mist and keeping the air intakes clean. If that’s the case you def don’t want to remove them.
What does everyone think? Is this correct or are they there for just intake noise?

Air box as in engine intake filter? I wouldn't mess with it, at all. I honestly can't think of any air box mods that do anything other than make more noise.

Okay, to be fair, I remember way way back when someone made a ram-air intake for their tundra back in like 2002 or 2003 that yielded like a quarter second faster 1/4 mile time or something, but that's it.

As for oil catch cans, that's an area I'm really unfamiliar with. I know that they're used to reduce foreign particulate from entering the cylinders in direct-injection applications... and our engine is direct and port-injection, right? Might be a good idea? ETA - as to the actual implementation, I couldn't tell you left from down.

I don’t know the exact purpose of the material inside the air box but I’m sure it’s there for a reason. Toyota wouldn’t spend money on additional parts that have no purpose. It doesn’t restrict airflow in any way if you look at the airbox carefully.

One thing I can tell you is that it’s definitely not for PCV since the PCV feeds into the intake manifold after the throttle body.

    1 - throttle body, 2 - intake air surge tank with intercooler, 3 - cylinder head cover, 4 - intake manifold, 5 - cylinder head cover LH, 6 - PCV valve, 7 - oil mist separator, 8 - cylinder block, 9 - ventilation hose, 10 - ventilation hose 2, 11 - ventilation hose 3. a - fresh air, b - blowby gas + fresh air, c - blowby gas
