Magnuson supercharger issue

Hey guys, sounds like my supercharger is having an issue. At idle both in park as well as in gear, I hear what sounds like a bearing issue. The noise is coming from the top center front just above the pulley about 6 inches.. on the supercharger. Any of you have an issue like this? If so, how easy is the fix? Where do the parts come from, though I would assume it would be Magnuson. There is no power difference noticeably anyway. But I don't want to be driving along and have my supercharger go out.

 

How many miles on the truck with the supercharger? Yes there is a rebuild kit for the charger

 

Unfortunately only about 7k. Unfortunately the original blanket tune from bully dog was not a good one for my truck and the extra bolt ons I already had on the Truck and had nothing but issues with it. It makes me think it caused issues.

I am now running OVTune and has been great.

Also, if it is the coupler there is a specific one to buy and a bad one NOT to buy. The Facebook group can tell you which one is which and where to buy.

 

Does it sound like marbles rattling around ?
As MJoeP said, it is probably your coupler.
7k miles, have Magnuson warranty it.

It is your coupler. The nose cone needs to come off.. to access the lower bolts on the cone, you need to either by lift the supercharger or remove the coolant crossover pipe underneath the cone.

Lots of guys reccomend the Jon bond coupler...I changed mine with the OEM magnuson coupler, which comes with the oring gaskets and new nose cone bolts. As you only have 7k miles on your charger, it should be a warranty repair... not sure if they warranty the labor but that parts should be.

Definitely a coupler. Not terribly difficult to fix.

 

Not true. With some ujoints you can pretty easily remove the nose cone without lifting the blower or removing the crossover.

My blower had the same issue when I bought it. It's pretty easy to swap the coupler and you don't need to undo anything except the pcv hose as I recall.

 

@snivilous do you have any pics of how you removed the nose cone without removing everything else? Not familiar with what u-joints are in regards to this repair

 

Sadly I do not, from memory the bottom two bolts that are more on the inside were the biggest pain, and I think the passenger side needed one ujoint and the drivers side maybe needed two. It was one of those things of sitting with 3 different length sockets, 3 different extensions, and some u joints and combining them in various ways until I could just sneak around everything. Once I got the combination right it was pretty easy, but I don't have any photos of that combination and it was awhile ago I did it too. I guess you can take comfort in the idea it IS possible without removing the blower, assuming you have the right combination of adapters and lengths lol

Thanks fellas, really feel like I can tackle this myself. Just don’t want to pay someone to remove the whole supercharger when they will most likely take the same shortcut and charge me full pop

 

It's more about dexterity and patience to reach the bottom bolts. Removing/rotating the nose of the blower up imo would be just as much if not more so of a pain in the ass since the bolts that hold it down are horrible to reach. At least the snout bolts you can use a ratchet once everything is lined up, the main blower bolts can only be turned like 1/8 turn at a time with a normal wrench.

 

My TRD supercharger went through 3 couplers. Kept getting the rattling after about 6 months. Called Jon bond and he said to send it in for a rebuild. I traded the truck in before that.

 

Nick T said it. You need to remove the coolant crossover or lift the supercharger.
I just completed a coupler replacement on a 2016 5.7 Tundra under the overhang building shade, on an island. Yes, thats right. Nobody in HI would touch it. Before I moved from CO, I offered a “performance shop” 1k to replace and no return call. Why everyone so scared.
All excuses on the island from dealers and independent shops and im not a mechanic.
10 hours total start to finish but 1 hour was making a tool to reach the lower right hex nose cone bolt (you dont need to make this when removing the crossover) . 1 hour was trying to get the nosecone out without lifting the supercharger or taking the coolant crossover off as suggested by someone. No way, no how, but maybe that guy who said this had a different engine size or year.
The magnuson replacement page is ok to see the set up but they also show the belt tensioner moving the wrong way with an arrow. It moves from driver-side to passenger-side with a breaker bar.
I chose to take the coolant crossover off. Best way is to take the belt off and then remove the fan and shroud to access more (4 nuts & 2 top bolts). Drop the skid plate 5-8 bolts depending how many toyota lost doing oil changes, drain a pitcher of coolant out and save (valve on driver side) Remove the idler pulley to access nuts on the coolant crossover.
I bought tools to do this and you will use 1/4,3/8,1/2 in this set.
Lowes- Craftsman 216 piece set $200.
Craftsman 4pc pick set (must have to get the coupler out). Metric socketed long allen set (you will only use the #6 on the nose cone and the belt tensioner+ adapt it for a breaker bar. Scary but go slow)
Homedepot- huskey drive tool set 19pc extensions $50 (you will use almost all these), 3 pc set- plier, needle nose, side cutter. cheap white rubber mallet , huskey allen set metric. Mini bright led flashlight, cheap mini step 12” tall in the cleaning isle to stand on and do work.
Autozone- simple 1/2 breaker bar. extra long double joint needle nose pliers, extension magnet,mini lithium grease tube.
This is a big puzzle but its doable if you have some auto knowledge.
Take many pics as you go for routing hoses and reference later. Also remember to take a pic of the bottom snout cover with the stamped magnuson number for reference later if needed.
All gaskets and seals were reused and looking very clean at 21k miles on the truck. Magnuson only sent me a tan colored replacement coupler. Wow huh.

Hello question for those who have replaced the coupler,
Went to replace mine went the coupler removal method do to slight noise at idle. Took about 8hrs taking my time, biggest pita was removing actual coupler from supercharger side seemed to be rusted on pretty well. When replacing I noticed where the coupler mounts on the supercharger side seemed to have a bit of play in it is this normal ? Worried it may be rebuild time but I hope not? Also whats with all the rust on the couplers? Does anyone know what causes this? seems normal from everyones pics...

 

I’d say the rust is probably just from condensation. Has your truck sat for a few days at a time?

 

Yes it has sat from time to time. How about the shaft where the coupler mounts (supercharger side not nose cone side) did you notice any play in yours when replacing it?

I didn’t replace the coupler myself, but I went through 3 over about 6-7 years of have a TRD SC on my 2010. There are rebuild kits for these SCs if you think yours if getting worn out.
