Transmission Fluid Question

So, to start out with I feel like an idiot and am embarrassed to tell anyone this, but I done messed up. So I changed my oil, which I've done several times just fine, but was distracted while doing so (perks of running a small business) and accidentally drained the wrong pan. Then proceeded to overfill my engine oil. I then drove about 20 miles before realizing what I did after the transmission wasn't shifting right. Hey, I said I feel like an idiot, get past it.

So, my question is, can I refill the AT fluid with the same amount I drained and then drive it to the local dealer for a full flush and filter change? It's about 45 miles to the dealer. It's the sealed transmission and is about due for a flush, so I'd rather they do it.

Don't forget to drain the extra from the engine!

Don't feel too bad. You aren't the first and definitely won't be the last! (I'm doing an oil change next week. )

 

I'm not sure why a transmission flush would be needed. Fill it up to the correct amount following the recommend process and you should be good assuming no damage was done which is probably unlikely.

 

I'm doing a full oil change today to do that and get rid of the old oil. With no distractions.

Put a Fumoto drain valve on the engine oil drain PRONTO so there's never again a bad case of mix-n-match.

 

I've seen those! They look cool but I wasn't sure how good they are.

 

Just don't install it on the transmission pan.

I too drained my transmission fluid on my first oil change back in 02 only because with the skid plate on, I thought the tranny pan was the bottom of the engine. So you’re not alone.

 

Well, I refilled it with the same amount and it seems to be shifting okay. I may still do a flush if it has any more issues. Thanks for the advice, guys.

 

One more question. I filled the ATF back up and redid the oil change right before I left on a two week trip. Someone mentioned that overfilling the oil may have caused some to overflow into the cylinders? I just got back today and am wondering if I should check anything before I start driving it again.

 

I doubt it would have gotten past the piston rings, but you could pull the sparkplugs and spin the engine with the starter. But if it ran with all the extra oil in it, and didnt grenade, i'd think its safe.

I changed my oil yesterday. I must have looked at the transmission pan bolt a 100 times.

 

I bet.

 

I blew out about 5 quarts of oil because I forgot to install the oil filter.
Been there, Done that.
