I dropped mine the other day to replace it. Glad I did, the amount of sidewall rubbing (top of tire as it is cranked up) was amazing. Probably wouldn’t have held the weight of the truck.

Not wanting that to happen again- any ideas? Thinking a old bike tube and gorilla tape? That really thick clear tape applied to sidewall before I crank new on up?

I use a thick rubber gasket material and glued it in place.

Good idea to drop the spare down every 6 months and rotate and clean all the dirt that collects inside the wheel. Remember to keep the spare at maximum pressure.

I'm interested in your gasket solution if you have pics.

When I bought my 2008 in 2020 I checked the spare and it was the ORIGINAL TIRE. All cracked up and wouldn't hold air despite having full tread. The wheel was all rusted too.

Naturally I replaced it but I'd like to save this spare from the same fate.

I just noticed this damage on my spare too, actually made me nervous airing it up to an operational pressure.

I was thinking about acquiring a matching 5th rim to do 5 tire rotations when it comes time to replace this set of tires, but not if the tires I depend on every day will be damaged when in the "spare" position.

My 07 had original spare, the original owner tried bragging to me like that was a selling point! I put 2018 TRD wheels on it and then scored a set of FREE crappy older factory alloys so that I could steal one for a spare and part out the rest. Now I have 5 aluminum wheels that all use same lug nuts and a much fresher spare tire. If anyone wants another spare that looks like photonerds I'll give it up for free. 100% tread but I wouldn't drive on it.

I just dropped my spare and noticed the damage as well. Not good to be driving on. Luckily I didn’t need it and will be replacing soon. Also going to look into the thick gasket material idea.

I just dropped mine for the first time since purchasing the truck new. In ok shape, cleaned it all up,gave the rim a good cleaning and coating. Tire is still good, aired up to 35 from 10 !

Just dropped mine after seeing this thread. We put a matching wheel/tire up there in the summer, so it wasn't bad but did have a some minor rubbing.

I cut up all old MTB tire and placed it in all for spots, friction fit for now. I'll secure the makeshift rubber gasket with some zip ties when it warms up.

You can also split some rubber hose and zip tie to the contact points for the spare.

    Good idea too.

I think I'll try hitting up our Canadian version of Harbour Freight (Princess Auto) and buying a couple feet of this. Making some cuts, gorilla double sided tape (trial before permanent) and slap it up on a few places.

With the size, I should only need a foot or two. Bad reviews are because of "rubber smell", which I won't care about.

I bought rubber heater hose from AutoZone when I did mine. Split it down the middle with a box cutter, slip it onto the contact areas and zip tie. Goes pretty fast.

Thank you for mentioning lug nuts!!

Not 48 hours ago, I mentioned to the wife that I had not checked the spare pressure in a LOT of years, and needed to do it ASAP. What I hadn't thought of was, I upgraded from SR5 to TRD rims last year, which meant new lug nuts, and naturally I THREW AWAY the old nuts. :frusty:

Oh well. Better to get reminded this way than at 2AM on a rainy night, 1000 miles from home.
