I find the mpg is usually 1-4 mpg better at the pump than by the dash computer

Something interesting I just did a little test on

In Utah regular E10 pump gas is 85 octane, which the truck runs fine on, but I'm getting around 13mpg (With my Super Pacific and 34s on there).

I tried some ethanol free 88 for 30c/gal more this last tank and saw over a 10% mpg boost. Actually costs me less to run the ethanol free due to the increased performance.

I want a hybrid when one becomes available...For someone that has realworld experience on both a gas and hybrid 3rd gen, is there a noticeable difference in city/hwy acceleration between the 2 (when towiing/not towing)?

No, the hybrid feels quicker and tows a little easier, but nothing that is actually changing your life.

Go with the hybrid. Gas mileage is excellent!!

All kidding aside. I average about 17-19 via the dash and that’s a mix of highway and city but also with cold nj weather and winter blend gas.

They can likely run 85 octane but its probably pulling a lot of timing and probably reducing power. At least on the 3.5 Ecoboost, they have to actually reduce the maximum air load with lower octanes to prevent knock. These tables from left to right show the allowable air load(basically torque) the Ecoboost will limit to based on octane. The left most table is for the lowest octane the right is the highest. The PCM will blend these tables based on the detected octane.

    upload_2022-12-20_13-41-30.jpg

Just be aware that being at high elevation doesn't mean these engines can be run on lower octane than normal. They are using the turbos to pressurize the cylinders the same way they would at sea level and so they require just as much, if not more, octane here(I am also in UT). The turbos are actually having to run harder and at a higher pressure ratio here to make the same amount of boost which means more heat. It is not like an NA V8 where the cylinder pressures reduce with elevation and so less octane is needed.

That is probably why you saw a solid jump when you went to 88, not neccesarily because of the ethanol.

I'm thinking winter blend gas. I went from 17.3 mpg in a platinum gas model to now getting 12.4 in a PRO. My commute is only 5 miles and all back roads so I don't really care about the mileage but I was surprised to see such a drop when nothing has changed except for the season.

My mileage is little lower with cold temps in 20 and 30 degree range. Still getting around 20-21.

The typical difference in energy per gallon of gas between summer and winter 1.7%. So the change in mileage in winter is more a function of increased drag from denser air at higher speeds, higher viscosity of lubricants at low temperatures, low tire pressures increasing rolling resistance and probably a few other things.

on December 23 I'll have my 22 Tundra Limited for 1 year. the best mpg I can get at 80 mph on the interstate in cruise is 14.6 mpg my 08 CM would get 16.8 mpg its not a major concern since I don't drive much. I'm at 8300 miles so far. but don't advertise something you can't achieve.

Recent trip from Mesa, AZ to Trumbull, CT. 2477 miles never below speed limit, not hyper-miled. 21.12mpg on 87 octane
Tundra MPG display said 21.1 mpg. Calculated was 21.1 mpg so I have no complaint.

I just drove my 22 over 300 miles in -12 weather today, some head wind there and tail wind back and got right at 15.6mpg.

So you’re saying you should get the sticker fuel economy numbers with a 3” lift, 33s at 80 mph? Please show me where Toyota advertised this! Did your 08 have the same mods and weigh the same? SMH

I was getting 15.2 mpg on eco @ 80 mph on the interstate before I lifted my Tundra, not its 14.6 mph not much difference. its my 5th Toyota truck. maybe I finally got one that doesn't get the gas mileage as advertised. my 08 was lifted 3" and averaged 16.8 mpg @ 80 mph on the interstate. I only drive 2 miles to work. I can go a month without filling up. I also have a 2019 TRD Pro 4 Runner they are built in Japan. and all I can say is the quality of my 4 runner is much much better than than my current US built Tundra.

I had a 23 4Runner the other day as a rental car. It felt much more solidly built than my tundra. I was shocked actually at how much better quality the whole interior felt. Having said that, I hated the way it drove. Could just be a bad example especially since a rental car, but on the freeway I had to really make an effort to keep it driving straight down the road…

I agree everything inside is a much better fit. I don't have a problem driving it. but the 4 runner is susceptible to wind. my 4 runner moves around a lot in moderate wind.

My stock tundra is better at keeping speed on inclines than my previous stock '16 4R Trail.

Both vehicles seem to average similar mpg numbers (17 mpg combined winter driving). But I only have ~700 miles on the Tundra, and I'm hoping this will change. If only we can get above -11F this week :( maybe I'll see better mpg.

I do like how the 4R is more planted in snow. I need to load the truck bed with tools to help with this...searching for a good design of diy sliding bed storage that would cover just the front half of the bed and keep the rear half open.

Based on data I have collected in Fuelly, the difference between my 2012 DC 4x4 and 2022 DC 4x4 is 15.9 vs 19.9 mpg in combined driving. The 2012 is based on approximately 4200 miles and 2022 3200 miles. So that’s about a 4 mpg difference which tracks closely with the difference in EPA ratings for the respective model years. If anything the 2012 numbers may be a touch high as it mostly included a 3800 mile trip from Idaho to Texas and Tennessee traveling off the interstates for the most part.

2023 SR5 Crewmax TRD Sport. All factory. 1100 miles. Broke it in per the manual, planning an oil change right after the holiday. Driving 'average' I see almost 19 around town, 24 driving 75mph on the interstate, and 15.9 towing our 22' bowrider boat (at just over the 1,000 mile mark) for the winter. It's gone up about 25% since about 500 miles; from new until then it was only around 14-15mpg no matter where it went. Driving in a hurry, I'll see 16 around town and 19-20 on the interstate (driving 85-90). But hearing the turbos kick in eases the pain.
Coming from a '19 TRD Pro that got 11-13, I'm loving life. Miss the growl from dual exhaust but happier in every aspect. Love it.

For the other Utah folks here, I’ve been using 91 octane from Costco and having ongoing low mileage so I’m going to try to “no ethanol” route as a last attempt to improve things.

For a CM non-hybrid, 15mpg city, 18 highway (hand calculated) isn’t the end of the world but wish I could get the 18-22 that other folks here are getting!

In my 2023 TRD Sport, I am averaging 16.6 city, 21.1 highway. This is using a calculator at fill ups. I find it is 1-1.5 MPG better than the dash display. 32 gallon tank
