    Hey guys,

I have a 2020 Tundra SR5 (TSS package) and have been noticing this for some time now but didn't know if this is an issue or not.

Basically in my Tundra when I am driving slow (low RPM) I feel a vibration on my steering wheel (see attached pic file). This ONLY happens when I am driving slow (low RPM)...never feel the vibration when I am driving fast. When I brought it up to Toyota, the lead mechanic drove the car and suggested it was due to the off-road tires that came stock with the TSS package (Duratracs 275-55-20 is what they are I believe).

The vibration is not big...I would say on the smaller scale (3/10). Just wondering if anyone knows what this is or if this is normal.

    Thank you in advance!

At low speeds you are probably feeling the lugs from the more aggressive tires that you are running. Quite normal and that readily happens when running MT tires. Duratracs are not MT, but are very aggressive. If that is the only time you are feeling that rumble in the steering then it is the tire lugs.

Other than that, wheel balance being off will induce wheel shimmy, vibration too but that usually happens at highway speeds.

I say normal, as I have experienced the same on different vehicles when I ran aggressive tires with big lugs.

Thank you so much for the reply! I was getting worried but feel better now with what you said. First time having these kind of tires so it makes sense now with what you said. Cheers and thank you!

I also have TSS, with the stock Goodyears still on, and let me tell you....I've had some issues with them. I've had the truck since June of last year, and I'm on my second full set of Goodyears, because the dealer can't figure out how to get them balanced. This second set is wearing uneven and no issues with alignment or anything. I also get the steering wheel vibration/shake if I've gone much over 5k since rotation. Ultimately, I'm just wearing them down as much as I can so I can step up to 275/60/20 Wildpeaks.

Good luck on yours. Hopefully either the dealer or their Goodyear rep can be more help than mine have been.

So weird! So you get sterring wheel vibration after 5k on the tires? Do you experience it only when you drive slow (low RPM)?

My 2014 TSS came stock with 285/55/20 KOs, and never had ANY steering wheel shimmy.
Bought after-market wheels and had terrible shimmy.

Had several rebalances, and some of them road force, never could get rid of it..
Put the OEM TSS wheels back on, no shimmy.
Fortunately, the wheel manufacturer gave me a full refund because I documented everything..

I'd be hard-pressed to blame it on the tires..
I ran 275/60/20 KO2s and now run Goodyear Wranger Ultra-Terrain in the same size from Discount Tire with no problems..

Did you experience the steering wheel shimmy at all speeds or just low RPM? Curious cause mine only happened while driving slow.

I have the same issue at low speed 30 mph. I’ve taken it back twice to dealership since I purchased it new in 2020 and both times they blamed the aggressive tires. I upgraded to Nitto RG 295/70/18 at about 2k miles from OEM Mich XLT AT set. I feel relieved that I’m not the only person that feels the same ride annoyance at 30 mph and under. That’s why I just drive 50 mph-80 mph everywhere! Smooth… I’ve heard great things about Nitto Recon AT and how quiet and smooth they ride. Looking like my next tire purchase and they come with 55k warranty attached. So hang on there until you’re next set of tires bud!

From what I remember it was slower speeds.
It would straighten out around 50-55..

At their worst I would get some at lower speeds, but the worst for me was in the 55-65mph range.

    I had the same.

drove it home with deteriorating tires, and vibrations not terrible but enough for me to change them out that same week. Got new Kuhma (sp?) To hold me over for a while, still had the vibration. Took them back for another balance and all m has been fine since.

I have noticed I feel a lot more of the road bumps in my steering wheel vs my Tacoma, that feels great to me. And thought maybe it’s just the 20’s with 275/55/20 tires that gives so much feedback?

Could be the damn needle bearing in the front diff. 4WD? Mine did this but the vibration was a higher frequency than a tire would probably produce.

Nice! So getting new tires fixed your issue?
