5k over MSRP for a TRD Pro 2022 and Hybrid power train clunkiness

So just got back from a toyota dealer in DFW with a white pro that they originally told me I could test drive and they’d make a hell of a deal on it. I said hell of a deal as in MSRP and they said yes. Until I get there and they won’t sell it for less than a $5k mark up. I say alright let me drive it first. Well after some back and forth they didn’t want to pull it out of the showroom floor. Because we have a limited 4x2 with hybrid power train same motor and it should feel the same power wise. I didn’t feel like arguing and wasn’t ready to buy a new Pro on the spot either way. So I drove the limited. After driving the SR5 TSS in the past I didn’t notice much power difference versus this hybrid power train.

Sport mode made it feel somewhat quicker but the turbo lag is noticeable and there was a weird jerkiness moment like it was trying to find gears. Only I assume it’s the hybrid motor. Definitely not a smooth drive off the line when flooring it. Needless to say I was not impressed and was wondering if anyone who has a similar model experienced the same. My old 5.7 feels smoother and better. My buddy who’s a Chevy driver felt the exact same thing. He was looking to possibly switch out of Chevy after just having his 2016 5.3 hit 94k miles and transmission failed.

another thing that drives me nuts and maybe you 3rd genners got used to it but the cramped windshield view is horrendous along with the giant screen. The screen is obnoxious and distracting. It would be good to watch movies on but unnecessary in a truck. The salesman said toyota designed it to be eye level so you don’t have to look down. Maybe I’m old school but I just found the cramped view with the screen rear view and recording camera to be annoying for a big truck. It feels like I’m looking out the dash of a Camaro

I really despise dealers with their bait and switch tactics. I would have told him to eat a bowl of dicks with that 5k over shit. But the tables are turning and they will need customers more than customers need them. I like the interior of the new gen, but like you I think the 60" screen is a bit much. 1/2 tons have gone the metrosexual route instead of the truck route in my opinion.

I have a non hybrid but will say it is much smoother and powerful than my 2020 5.7. When towing, night and day difference. As far as the big screen, I keep mine in night mode as all of the white was distracting. Still, no comparison to the 2020. I am pleased with the move.

I figured there was a dumb down setting cause the white screen was too bright. I agree on smoothness of the non hybrid. Had one as a rental. I still can’t get over the narrow windshield. Maybe it takes some getting used to also. I just feel like a big truck should have a panoramic front

There’s a tsb for the tundra for some transmission jerks. My 22 pro didn’t have any. It was far superior to the 21 pro in every aspect except exhaust sound and handling.

See all the more reason I’m pissed I didn’t get to drive the real thing. Pretty sure that limited although new with 18 miles had this issue. I never experienced it in the tss or sr5 test drives in lesser trimmed gen 3s without hybrid

The windshield felt crazy narrow at first to me as well

After a couple weeks in the new truck it feels fine…The new one has narrower A pillars so that helps too

First time I sat in 3rd gen I had similar impression of front windshield, then I thought it felt like being in the cockpit of a jet and I now think its awesome. :D

I dont have the jerkiness on my 23 Limited. It's not a hybrid though. If you want to make the drive to Paris, TX (45 min from Plano) contact Clint McMillan (903)517-3553. They sell for MSRP plus window tint and sometimes $1k under. You can check their inventory.

There's no clunkiness nor delayed response with my '23PRO. I step on the gas and there is zero hesitation. I'm used to driving an FJ and in comparison the Tundra's windshield is enormous!

    Hope you get one!

Probably seemed jerky because you were pushing the pedal the same amount as the 5.7, the hybrid 3.5 has way more bottom end. Kind of like driving a sports car if your not used to the throttle response they will seem jumpy / jerky.

I think dealership sales people can tell if you're ready to buy or not, and they don't want to let everyone test drive that Pro.

Of course it's a shitty dealership who did bait and switch on you, but in general, people who want a Pro just come and buy it without much talking themselves into it or seeing how the test drive goes. They'll probably end up selling it to someone at $5k over anyway very soon

Hybrids are still sell at 10k over msrp in California, or $15k over msrp for pro. And no inventory available

Never buy a demo vehicle. Especially one that has turbos. Conversely, never buy a turbo’ed vehicle based on a test drive of another.

Demos are almost always ragged out. But with the turbos, it’s even more important to give it at least a 3k miles break-in period with easy idling prior to turning off. That means no hard launches, heavy towing, etc.

Hybrids are listed for $10k over in Cali not sure how much dealers will actually do down by... Let's assume they'll go down $5k over msrp best case?

But we got very little inventory, so that should help keep prices high I imagine

That doesn’t reflect very well on the intelligence of the average Toyota buyer in California.

I am still amused by the markups on the Tundra, especially the Crapstone and Turd Pro. They’re not that special in the wider market of 1/2 ton trucks. Are they decent trim levels? Sure. Good value at MSRP? Probably not. Worth even a $1.00 markup over MSRP? No way in hell.

Oh well, fools and their money are soon parted and it’s a free country where being foolish is a person’s right. I just wish more people would consider the consequences of making horrible financial decisions and taking on that much debt for a vehicle.

There's two sides to every view here -

Let's say that person likes Toyota because of its reliability, he did not research much online or refused to belive that Tundra can be bad, so he only wants a Tundra. He is not experienced buyer (many are not) , and dealer manipulate them.

Or a person who needs a truck now, for his daily driver, and won't buy the other American trucks because of past bad experience. So that person will buy Tundra.

There are a lot of people like ones I describe above. Whether they're stupid or not, they want their Tundra.

So they go out and try to buy their Tundra. Some give up because they can't find one (there's still low inventory available), or refuse to pay $5-10k above msrp markup

Many will pay above msrp because they just want to buy a Tundra and don't want to be their own car broker for the next two months hustling hundred dealerships all over the state (like I did) . They want to go on with their lives.

And many people have the means to buy a new Tundra, so they do.

Low supply = price is high
    New model = high demand
High demand = price remains high
Sales people = charge as much as they can get away with = happy sales people

    Does this help?

The dealers in my area have tundras on their lots. I get an email a week for the tundra. They are discounting them down here. I guess in Cali since the minimum wage will be $22hr the can charge those $5-10k over MSRP prices. I can see the BK and MCD workers pulling up in their new Pro tundra. :D

No delay In my ‘23 Pro. Had a ‘22 Double cab, so I know of the off the line lag. 100% Gone w hybrid.

If dealer told ya MSRP, THEN changes to 5k over. I’d be walking unless u really want it. I paid 5k here in Ca, was cheapest I could ever find. Got a random call so I bit bullet since looked for 9 months. Solar Pro was just extremely hard to find, let alone purchase.

You do get used to the screen and window does feel a tight, but again, more u drive it the more it feels normal.

limited hybrid is a great option if that can be found…

Feel like the hybrid is how the Tundra should have come out. Pro is a great model and if it’s what you want go after it. Your personal choice

    No.

Your word fort in no way serves as an intelligent justification for paying over MSRP for a mass produced vehicle that will depreciate.

Only weak people or morons with the instant gratification tendencies of children do things that stupid. If you’re too mentally weak and stupid to wait a few months for something new and shiny, then you get taken advantage of. This is especially inexcusable when it is possible to buy the exact same product elsewhere for far less money. There are now plenty of dealers nationwide who aren’t marking up trucks.

Lol you and the other guy saying buy at or under MSRP are very narrow minded. Like I've explained multiple times in 2 other threads now, the supply and demand is different from area to area. Maybe take a economics class sometime?

Also you can't just buy out of state, once CA DMV knows you bought out of state guess what you get to pay a additional registration fee.

If you don't understand this, ask why fast food restaurant chains charge more for certain items in certain areas. Just maybe the same supply and demand is at play.

You can keep typing out all you want that those ppl are morons and are inexcusable to pay for a #1 meal more then another guy paying for a #1 meal another town over.

California residents who buy vehicles out of state only need to pay a “Use” tax which is just the difference in sales tax in the state they purchased the vehicle and whatever their sales tax is in California.

Basically your registration fee is just paying sales tax difference state to state so California gets a cut so they can waste your tax dollars. The total in taxes paid is no more than California tax, which is outrageous but that’s what it is.

There’s no extra fee above what you would pay in sales tax/registration in California. Assuming you’re buying new, and it’s 50 state emissions legal, not paying $5,000 to $10,000 over sticker will save you money in both purchase price and taxes.

Even factoring in air fare, fuel, and a hotel to get your shiny new ride back to the lane of sunshine and taxes a guy will still come out well ahead.
