My new-to-me 2010 5.7 4x4 has 276300 on it. It had a oil change before I bought it but unclear whether or not they used 0w20 or 5w20. I've had a few mechanics suggest switching to a heavier grade.
Is something like a synthetic 5w30 or 10w30 a bad idea for this engine?
Truck is in a cold weather state.
    Appreciate any recommendations, thanks -

Pennzoil 0w20 Full synth High mileage is what I have been running. With 5w20 swap in the summer.

New plugs might be in order too if you don't know the replacement history?

    NGK V powers are good.

I think you can run any oil and any of the weights you suggested would be fine. People that have valvetrain noise usually run thicker oil, and some people argue the engine should run thicker since some foreign specs call for thicker and the thinner is just for emissions.

Personally I'm at 282k and just run 0w-20 since that's what the thing says and change it every 5k. I wouldn't overthink it, hard to fuck up the oil on the 5.7.

    I have 280K on mine.

Been on 5-20 or 0-20 almost its whole life @ 10K intervals. I wouldn't dump your oil until its ready for a change. I would stick with a 0-20 , 5-20 or 0-30 or 5-30

Mine has around 280,000 on it and I run 5W-20 high mileage full synthetic. I am in Tennessee so it really doesn’t stay very cold here for very long. Change it every 5k.

I'm running full-syn 5w30 in my '07 these days to eliminate valve train noise/ chatter. This last oil change I also added half a bottle of Seafoam to break up any buildup that may have accumulated over the years and a bottle of STP high mileage oil treatment. I bought mine used back in 2017. She has around 220k on her (I think).

I would ditch the stp. No need for it and probably more likely to cause issues

I’ve used 0-30 and 5-30 for its whole life (220k). Burns zero. Leaks zero. Was spotless under valve covers when i replaced a spark plug tube gasket a few months ago.

I think its more important you’re staying on schedule with oil/filter changes than the weight…20 or 30 weight always hold up well in these things. If you tow, stop/go/idle a lot or live in heat, I’d lean towards the 30w oils.

Not a fan of 10k mile oil changes so I'm pretty religious around the 5k mile mark, although I’ve drug it out to 7500 a few times.

Based on what? There may be no need for it, but it's no different than if I had used oil for "high mileage" vehicles. Most reviews on the product are positive.

If you want to run a thicker oil why not use a 0w-30 or even a 0w-40 or 5w-40. That way it’s engineered with correct additives. Oils today are really good and shouldn’t need any extra additives, and will go easily for 10k OCI

that stp syrup could cause any number of issues including sludge buildup, additive clash, et.
It may be fine , but I just don’t see the need for risking it.

    Good point.

I never add anything to my oil.

If I wanted more additives, I would switch to brands that have the applicable additive pkg, ex. more moly.

    Presently still running Kirkland 0w-20 / 5w-30.

Oil analysis has told me the oil is wearing ~5k. yes it's still good, but it's wearing. So I change at 5k.

If life gets in the way - I can run it longer and not worry.

I run daughter's '18 Highlander to 7500. That car is easy on oil.

    Same for the son's '15 4runner.

none of our Toyotas burn oil. none.

the '06 Sequoia never burned oil.

so, don't focus on the mileage - focus on if you are burning oil & making sure you stay full.

That Seafoam sure works! Had the warmup clatter from the timing chain tensioner. No more after using it in the oil!
Been running Toyota 0w-20 synthetic. Works well but damn is that stuff expensive now! Costco synthetic oil caught my eye the other day. Don’t know how good that stuff is. Around $3 or $4 per quart if you buy ten of them.

Kirkland oil proved itself to me. I've mentioned on other threads i used it during my S/C install & the associated dyno runs (~18 of them). had a Blackstone done after another 4000 miles after install & the oil performed damn well. I've used it since the 1st oil change on my '20 Tundra.

Project Farm youtube channel does a nice video on it.

engines don't fail if they have oil in them...near any oil. just keep it oily. any oil will do.

Hello everyone, I switched to 5w30 Mobile One full synthetic from 0W20 Pennzoil Platinum and am happy with the lower valve train noise especially at highway speeds! Anyone run 10w30?

There really wouldn’t be any reason or benefit to run 10w-30.

the 0w-30 or a 5-30 is a good choice. I would even be tempted to run a 0-40 euro oil or rotella if wanting a thicker oil
