Just wanted to share this stupid-simple solution I found.

First, I bought this thing on Amazon, just for the self-adhesive "magic plate" (LOL) it contained. The "magic plate" is just a paper thin self adhesive steel plate, which I stuck to the back of my phone and then put the case back on. Then I threw the mount itself in the trash.

Then I found a couple old magnets in my junk drawer. Very strong, plastic coated, about 1/4" thick. Together they make about 1" square. I stuck them on the center AC vent on the dashboard, using 3M VHB two-side tape. Strong stuff.

The magnets only stand a mm or two above the surface of the dash. Just enough.

They don't bock the AC vent from opening, or block the air flow in any meaningful way, so the vent can still be used when the phone isn't mounted.

That's it, done! Toss the phone at the magnets and you're in business, it sticks like crazy. I mean you can LITERALLY toss the phone at the vent and it will stick every time. No way the phone is coming off accidentally, ever. It's at just the right distance to be able to reach out and touch the screen without leaning forward. It looks much cleaner and sleeker than the "mast" style mounts most people use, and I guarantee it holds the phone more securely. I like it so much I finally tossed my old Garmin that used to sit on the dash on a "beanbag" type base.

Living in Florida, I’m surprised you sacrificed an air vent. I installed my magnet just below the vent so that I can turn my phone sideways and still have a functional vent.

I feel you! I'm a swimming pool renovation contractor, so I earn my living busting my ass under the broiling sun. If I'm climbing into a smoking hot cab, I just run all the vents at 100% like always for the first couple minutes. Once things get down to temp, I can do without the one vent, no problem.

This is the same phone mount I use in two of my vehicles and love it. Simple, low profile and the rare earth magnets hold even in the roughest terrain.

    I'm more impressed with your 216K miles...:D
I have a Rokform case and used to have one of their magnets stuck to the dash.
But since replacing the Entune Hu with a Kenwood wireless Carplay HU, I have no need for the phone on the dash..

Glad you found something that works for you.

I thought similarly, until I tried it and realized I was wrong.

That's a pretty cool mount you posted. I like mine better, but I bookmarked yours anyway. It looks like the second best one I've seen!

Nice setup. Good to see another contractor on here. I have no issue blocking that vent. It's a rare occasion I have them on, though I certainly don't live in Florida. Usually got the air on the legs and windshield.
