I've got this uncle. Ex-Army. Nam. Hunter. Outdoorsman. Can track an animal. Hard life. Lives alone in an RV on my dad's place.

He's the only uncle I've got that ain't been to prison and is decent. I've had a devil of a time comin across a good Christmas gift idea for him and could use yall's help.

Before you say knife, that was last year's gift.

Tundra relevance: he's got one. 2nd gen 2WD RCSB.

If he still gets out, lives an outdoor life, maybe a good set of Binoculars or Monocular. Vortex makes some nice ones, lifetime, no hassle warranty.

Surefire or Fenix long range or tactical style flashlight.

Handmade leather wallet or belt (I own Popov, made in Canada, quality stuff).

These are the ones I have. I paid about $225 cad. 8x32. Came in a nice semi hard case (yes, I said semi hard) and neck strap, small cloth and caps for both ends.

I've never spent that much on binoculars. After many cheap, $40 Costco type pairs, the upgrade was definitely worth it. Price and quality go up from here. These were widely regarded as a great entry level into the higher end gear.

I'm liking @BravoDeltaRomeo 's idea about the binos.... as the eyesight goes, it's nice to have a way to compensate and binos adjust to anyone's eyesight so they end up being 'custom' fit. I agree on the Vortex brand, as I have several pieces from them (plus order direct from their website); good customer service and speed. Leupold also has some in a very reasonable price range that you can find throughout the holidays at Bass Pro Shops, Midway USA, etc.... Also, a nice little side gift is Vortex's harness strap (under $30); works w/any brand and allows him to comfortably keep them slung and secure at chest level when not in use.

Another idea might be a couple of nice cigars if he's into that kinda thing. I know a lot of dudes from that era are. But, I know nothing about them, so can't help you w/that.

Finally... and probably most importantly, your time!!! Plan something out that you guys can do together (just the two of you); could be a short road trip to somewhere he's fond of or to explore an area he hasn't been, etc... As people get older, time spent w/those they care about far outweigh possessions/items.

Good luck!!!! I know you'll come up w/something epic!!!!

Rod and reel, bow/crossbow, gift/fuel card, gourmet beef jerky, a smoker or grill, tools, a jack, seat cover set, electric blanket, air compressor, boots, sort of depends on if you need to ship or not and what the budget is. You could also consider partnering up with others for something a bit more costly. Good luck and happy shopping!
