Anyone use the Toyota spare tire lock? Other options?

Put a weatherproof Masterlock in the chain links.

I thought about that, especially since I can get one at Lowe’s for 1/2 of what Toyota charges.

Never heard of someone stealing a spare tire under the truck. Now a custom rim/tire on the back of a jeep, sure.

And those locks fail at the worst time, rust, corrosion from being under the truck and then when you really need it, can't unlock and use the spare.

Unlike with my old 4Runner, I did things the right way this time (to me) and ordered 5 matching aftermarket wheels/tires for my truck. Since it is a nicer wheel, I would prefer to lock it up. I was looking into the factory spare lock when I came across this thread. Will the weatherproof lock in the chains serve the same purpose as an easier solution? I know nothing is 100% safe against a motivated person with bolt cutters.

Tailgates are another popular thing to steal. I guess it shouldn't be that big of a deal with the gen 3s.

    I use the Toyota lock.
It's just a socket that attaches to the tire-lowering gear.
Then you have a 'key' that locks onto the end of the shaft that goes into that socket to lower it.
As @Eurodriver stated, people will steal anything.

Steal 4 Tundra spares off fairly new trucks and you have a set of new tires.
Steal 5 and you have a spare yourself....

Besides, how long would it take someone to realize someone stole their spare?
Probably not until they had a flat and needed it..:eek2:

The $50 for the lock is cheaper than having to buy a new rim and tire.
Wouldn't take much more time to steal the spare than it took to steal my cats..

Kind of hard to turn the hoist if it has a lock through the links.
