Strange question, I know. Just curious. It was supposedly changed 1k miles ago. The filter looks degraded to me. I’m suspecting that this was not changed for a very long time. 150k miles on the engine.

It seems to me like they didn’t change the filter when they last changed the oil. Maybe it has been two changes since the filter was changed?

EDIT: one more bit of info – the drain plug was torqued down so hard on the filter housing that I had to use a breaker bar to loosen it. I was able to remove the entire filter housing just by turning the drain plug. Completely ridiculous.

Looks aftermarket to me. Done by an independent local shop. A friend thinks he was ripped off.

To me, it looks like there’s no way this filter only has 1000 miles on it, which is when the shop says it was last changed.

I said signatures, not sediments!

He should replace it with Mr. Kirk L. And’s special recipe.

I just changed my oil and filter on Friday. I used an OEM filter and the glue used on the top was not clear like in your picture. I was a foggy white. I would assume aftermarket…but I could be completely wrong.

Additionally, my filter had 4k miles and didn’t have those small clumps on the edges.

Yeah I don’t think the one I posted pics of is OEM. OEM filters have the part number on one end. The one in my OP also looks like it has been in there forever. I’ve never seen an oil filter so frayed and filled with dirt and sediment.

Unfortunately, never truly know it's done right unless done yourself. Greed now drives a profit narrative over customer service and moral standards.

I was wondering how your 21 got over 150k on it, then realized it was a friend. Got the impression you were a diy'er also.

    Pretty things
Seems pretty common for oil techs to over tighten the filter housing cap... Then the next guy breaks a few tabs off the plastic cap, and says "fuck it, they'll never know I charged to replace a filter I didn't. I mean, I DID TRY."

My filter looked pretty yucky upon the first oil change of my ownership, and the oil that came out looked like it could have been poured from a sealed bottle, so I know it had JUST been changed. The filter cap was so shredded, and it took quite the go with one of my beefier impact drivers to finally come loose. Replaced the cap with the aluminum version and perform my own changes, so there have not been any further issues.

I also like to stick with OE filters, and just pick up 5 or 6 at a time since the parts guys will usually cut you a deal.

This is truth right there BUT sometimes life’s realities get in the way of doing it yourself.

In regards to my Tundra I do the oil changes myself because I am very fortunate to have it as my 3rd vehicle. I usually do about 6k a year so if I miss and oil change by a week or two even a month it’s no big deal.

Different story for my wife’s and my commuter cars.

I wish I had the time to consistently maintain all over vehicles. But due to my career choices, I get stuck with a lot of forced overtime. So the choice becomes time with my kids (sometimes after not seeing them for days) or change my own oil. This makes the decision very easy for me…

And all dealerships are not created equal. I have had zero problems removing the oil plug, oil canister drain plug, or the plastic oil canister after the one dealership I frequent touches my vehicles (many different Toyota’s). Other dealerships not so much…needed 3 foot breaker bars to remove the oil canister which is ridiculous.
