    Greetings all,

We have had our 2008 SR5 Tundra for 12 years (bought with less than 60,000 and now has 198.000+) and we have noticed an unusual noise from behind the cluster in the dash. it can only be heard when exceeding 50 mph. A guess would be a speedometer cable going bad but if I understand everything I researched today, there is no cable as it is all electronic, right? The speedometer works fine but the noise is definitely associated with the speed as it changes with accel/decel ~ Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance ~
    Bill

No cable of any kind back there. Just one 40 pin electrical connector. All signals are digital.

The cluster does have a sound generating device for beeps/tones when key is in the ignition, traction control is kicked on by ecu (wheel slip). It makes several different tones for different actions.

Really just guessing here but maybe it’s picking up some bad feedback and making a noise or hum. Electronics can do this sometime.

Does the noise sound more like a mechanical rumble/grind or an electronic hum.

Any chance it’s coming through the firewall, from the column or pedals ect and just sounds like it’s coming from the cluster?

    Thank you Jeff_5_7 ~
It definitely sounds like a high-speed grinder but not as intense. At first, I wondered if a muffler or catalytic converter had come loose and was rubbing lightly on the drive line, however, after checking I could find no signs of freshly rubbed metal (or anything loose for that matter) on the undercarriage anywhere. Because of how fast it seems to be going (consistent with the throttle), the speedometer cable was my next guess, but you have confirmed what my research implied. Now, I am back to square one ~
