Recently bought a 2005 4.7L v8 and it’s having worse gas mileage than it should be. I’m getting 160km for half a tank. Most recent fill up on gas came to 43L/100km. Is this normal? Odometer is reading 283000kms. Is there anything I can do or check on? Also experiencing a coolant leak.

Pretty normal. Today I had 101 miles on 10.9 gallons, which read as half a tank (even though a true half tank is a couple gallons more)

Its winter here so I've had it idling a bit and plowed the road once so thats a bit worse than I normally get, but not dramatically so. I also have oversized tires so that doesn't help.

    Welcome to the club.

My 2004’ gets 16.5mpg hwy. 13mpg in town. 10-12mpg. Towing. The gauge doesn’t move from full for a bit but then moves fast. My fill-ups are at around 316 miles with the gauge in the last quarter. I drive almost all highway miles and no short trips. Sometimes by watching the gas gauge I might be at 70miles for the first quarter…and get to half quickly…but doing the math at fill up it’s 16 something. At close to 300,000 miles I’ve never accused the truck of getting great gas mileage. I don’t think I’ve ever hit 20mpg with it.

That's pretty bad, works out to 5-6mpg. You should typically get 11-15 in town (most seem to get 12-13mpg).

Check your fuel trims and o2 sensor readings. You could see if the maf is bad as well.

Is it 4WD or 2WD? Sorry if I missed that, it's somewhat important.

V8/4WD here, with a lighter access cab. I average around 370-380km per tank with a mix of 70/30 driving (city/hwy).

Do you know what spark plugs are installed? What brand of MAF the truck has installed? Any maintenance history at all?

Did you sign up for Toyota Owners website yet to see if there are any maintenance docs there?

Do a proper calculation, there are too many variables using the fuel gauge. Fill up and reset the ODO, then next fill up, divide the fuel amount into the distance traveled.
