So I have a sequoia with 210k miles. Runs like a champ, but has had the infamous 'cold start' knock for as long as I can remember.

I have tried pretty much everything listed in these forums for the past 2 years. I am finally attaching a video with the sound so maybe someone can recognize it and give some ideas on how to resolve.

    so far I have tried:
    - replaced fuel injector pressure regulator.
    - sea foam full treatment
    - heavier viscosity oil (10-40)
    - only using toyota filters
    - lucas oil treatment
    - spark plug replacement

The video switches from being in gear to out of gear. While in gear you can distinctly hear the knock. When out of gear, the sound goes away.

any ideas or thoughts are appreciated!

@Darkness could this be related to what we were just discussing with valve adjustment?

    Paging @empty_lord too.

yep bank account is running low from it..
Check your transmission bolts and cross member make sure none are loose first?

Check transmission oil when was the filter changed last?.

Sounds like a bolt on the torque converter in that area has backed off somewhere?

Transmission might make sense too. I just asssumed the knock was going away because the truck runs at a different RPM when in gear vs neutral.

I don't think its valves. That's an odd one, I'm thinking the same as Mike that it's related to the torque converter or trans.

thats one of those noises where you need a stethoscope really. In some rare cases ive seen flex plates crack and make a knock like noise

Not that I know of. I got it used. I have a stack of documents with it's service history, and there is no tranny work in the stack.

Buddies extremely well maintained original owner 22RE at 450k broke a Piston Ring, sounded the same.

Curious if this was trans related.

Why are the pics side ways? o_O

Same here. Noise persists but it runs great. I've just been ignoring it.

I think mine is coming from the valves themselves. It sounds like it is right on top of the engine. It sounds like it is running too lean, but I don't think that's what's going on. Its worth poking my head underneath by the bell housing though, the sound might be transmitting.

Is it more of a ticking or knocking?

My truck and a bunch of the other guys' trucks on here tick like crazy. Sounds to me like typical lifter rattle in older SBCs. I was told it's supposedly the injectors, but I'm not interested enough to unplug my injectors one by one to test that theory.

It's clatter or a light knock is how I would describe it, and only during cold starts for probably less than 15 seconds. I've been told it is piston slap due to wear and tear and high mileage. I might believe that, the oil was not changed on time (6000-7500) miles between oil changes on dino oil pretty consistently for its 200,000 mile life.

Last time I heard a sound like that it was my 81 Buick Regal with a spun rod bearing from running my engine with little to no oil for 2 months. Needed a whole lower block replacement.

Obviously not the same as it would be much louder by now and noticeable by anyone walking or driving by.
